Thanks Cujohn. I think it looks like that because the copper is lifting up from the coin and the shadow makes it look like that

Won't comment on something I have little insight on, but interesting thread.

Thanks Coinfrog. It's an open discussion so feel free to add your thoughts. I'm sure you've been doing this longer than I have so your insight is more than welcomed

Have you relocated the coin yet? I really would like to see a better edge image

Not yet but I do have a few more pics of the edge. I'll see if any of them show something different otherwise I'll have to take more in the morning. The sun is going down and I won't have natural lighting to take good pics. I'll see what I can come up with in a few minutes

Seems interesting enough that I'd probably throw it in a 2x2 for safekeeping. Not sure that there will ever be much of a numismatic premium, but it is interesting to ponder.

Thanks Spence. It's been in a 2x2 for almost a year now. Nothing too special but a nice conversation piece. Keeps the brain working thinking how did this happen

Looks like a case of cracked copper plating.

A question. Why wouldn't this be a defective planchet? The "fissure" on the obverse seems to be more than a plating issue since it appears deeper than the plating.

I agree with that defective copper plating. Come across a few of these while roll hunting. I haven't found one that's worthy for me to keep. That would be one in a 2x2 for me

Thanks gorham collector. I got this one from ebay for around 20 bucks. I thought it was cool so I bought it. When you can't find it buy it. Lol
