Canadian Coins- Knowingly Over Grading

Hello Malissa,
would prefer not to put it up here. The person has live listings right now and it is not any of my business to say one way or another. All I did is mention that it is not right and should be somehow stopped or some protection built in. For all I know, it might even be you ....?
the person is in ON. As I wrote on a reply to someone else... Grading is subjective.. and what I think is a VF20, someone else might "honestly" think it is a 40...
Also, one side might be a 20 and the other an 8 what will it be then?
i will just simply not buy.....

If you're going to mention major overgrading by a seller, we would all benefit from seeing it. It's one thing to say something is over-graded, quite another to provide a link we can all learn from.

Hi it's no problem at all if you would rather keep the links to yourself. Though that makes it more difficult for us here that are trying to learn from the posts we read.

I think grading is a very tough area for some collectors. I have sat down with different guides to try to learn what the high areas are, and how to grade depending on wear in those areas, and on some sites I have visited, they have a different list for the same coins as to what areas to watch for wear on.

I recently bought a book here that has a very detailed account of how to grade each and every American coin and I love it. I wonder if there is something out there with Canadian coins in it. Just a book about grading?

As for if it was me? Absolutely not! I am not on ebay or any other auction site, and I would never reply with just telling you not to buy. I try to post most of my coins here for a community grade and sometimes will lower my grade to respect the majority opinion, rarely, I don't agree with the opinions and leave my coins as they were.

I do however sell coins on this forum. And though it may not be necessary, I feel that even the slightest hint of misconduct done specifically by me should be addressed.

It may have been an unintentional, just general "maybe" type of statement on your part, and I like to give the benefit of the doubt to everyone, but I found even the implication of dishonesty offensive. I have never once had anyone request to send something back to me, and I offer 100% no questions asked return policy.

I have never had a complaint even once in regard to my representation of a coin for sale or had anyone tell me they felt I had misled them by overgrading. I feel that by saying "it might even be you, this person lives in Ontario" can give newcomers to this forum an unflattering opinion of me and that is unfair.

Just for the record there are currently 13,425,124 people in Ontario and that would make it pretty probable that I am not the only coin collector in my province.

I have used that site as well. I love that there are so many examples of grade on there as well as really good information. I am going to check out that book too though. It seems I can never quite get my hands on enough coin books. :)

The book DBM mentioned "Standard Grading Guide for Canadian & Colonial Decimal Coins" by Charlton and Willey" is a good book on grading Canadian coins. As far as I know, it's the closest we have to a Photograde or the like. It is older though ... still I find it very useful and recommend it very much, especially given its reasonable price.

Looking over those ebay links, I would say the grades they provide are optimistic at best--and innacurate by my book.
That said, I think collectors here strive to be accurate, and we're a close-knit group who help each other on grading our coins.
Grading is always open to discussion...when put constructively it helps us become better collectors.

At least the pictures are large, and there are quite a few. It gives the potential buyer enough information to make an informed decision (if they know how to grade a particular coin series, anyway).. which is more than I can say for a lot of coin auctions.




The ebay rules state the subject line of the auction should not contain a grade unless the coin is in a slab from an "approved" TPG. The description can have any grade the seller likes (and often does!), just not the subject (or the little extra line under it). However, that might only be for U.S. auctions - I know a lot of their 'rules' are per-country, and I haven't peeked at Canada's. So it might not even be applicable to them. If it is, then their auctions probably would have been pulled for that infraction if they'd been reported.
