well 1st I would say that I think the rage will continue on the second one! I also think the 3rd one might be the sleeper but probably not. By sleeper I mean the least attractive only b/c people after this next one might get burnout on this third coin b/c of the hype of the first and 2nd one.. We know the last one will be a sell out b/c for some reason people think the last coin of a series will be worth something! Only my opinion
I am sure it will sell crazy on ebay

Kinda same spot as you Morgans Dad. I talked to the teller at my bank(actually a credit union) yesterday and asked if they had any of the new penny's. She said no and they probably wouldn't get any since they have a change machine and don't need any more penny's. But she said if I wanted she could order a box for me, take about a week to come in. So my question is should I order a box now or wait at this point until 2nd release? if I ordered would I get 2009 penny's for sure? Is the mint still sending out new Lincolns now? Worst case scenario is I have a bunch of cents to search but I can't really lose since It's still worth 25$ right?

JC, It would seem you are not sure the box you will receive will be the 2009, 1st or 2nd, also for that matter, they could be other than 2009's, In my opinion, order the box, the best part, it will cost $25.00. The 2009-P is, according to the latest mint issue figures, is becoming a hard to obtain item, just my opinion.... "does the term Boston Tea Party" mean anything to anyone......

The rage will continue through all four releases in 2009 IMHO. The bronze releases have yet to be scheduled but the $55.95 Lincoln proof set, with a 50,000 set limit, might take the whole thing to new heights!

I shudder to think what the Lincoln proof sets will bring in the re-sale market. I'm envisioning Coin World ads this fall asking for $499.95 with a limit of 1!

A complete set, of the 2009 Lincoln Cents all versions, in rolls dated first day of release and contain a Lincoln stamp, canceled with the local Post Office's name on the rolls, with the Special Mint set ( only 50,000 ), think about it in an ebay ad, you could only imagine the asking price??...

I imagine another short term frenzy with collectors trying to get ahold of them just like the first set. However, long term I think they'll be very common in very good condition.

They're only hard to get right now because of the low demand for cents by banks, so they're all sitting in some fed/us mint vault somewhere. Once all the people that are willing to pay $100 for a roll RIGHT NOW are out of way I think prices will drop significantly.

Sorry Morgans Dad Not a Old time collector. I just had to chime in on this. I wonder how many people you are talking with you to Ind? I hope you score a truck load. Best of Luck to you on this, I live in Nebraska and if it were closer by 600 miles I might make it. LOL. This brought on another thought by myself. I wonder when the mint will start reducing runs of coinage? The reason I ask this and I am sure it has been asked before. Most people now do transactions with Debit cards, Not so many cash purchases as there used to be.

Also the Hoarding of the 2009 cent is going to be a long one. You are going to find BU samples of these cents for years to come I think. The last time they changed the appearance of the cent was 50 years ago. There have been a lot of new collectors added since the last change. Kind of funny my oldest Brother turns 50 this year so I am building him a display case with all coins from 1959.

Some one on here asked the question a time ago about how come the 1914-D is worth more than the 31-s Cent? It was brought out that the 31-s was hoarded by collectors and there are a lot more 31-S's in better shape and condition. Not saying I am right or not it still makes sense, ( no pun intended) get it Cents, ha LOL moving on.

I hope the Post office in Lincoln city on May 14Th is prepared for the onslaught they are going to encounter. If I were you I would take some extra Lincoln Stamps with you ahead of time just in case they run out. I wouldn't want to stand out there in that line for what you are going to encounter. Pray for Rain. Meaning this, If it is raining and misty like the last one the crowd might and hopefully will be smaller.

On May 14Th the Mint will be slammed with Orders. How many people on here are going to order the max that they can due to what is going on on E-Bay? When I ordered my LP-1 Set that's Right 1. That was a mistake, should of ordered 5 but I also got my proof that day as well Should of ordered the UNC Lincoln as well. Live and learn.

Now the real Question will the Mint Flood the Market from the Mint orders for LP-2 go from 100k to Say 250K? I noticed the set I got were packaged before the release date. A Lot of others I have seen pics of were Even packaged in February. Have the Mints granted OT and are piling on the orders in anticipation or are they going to secure the 100K run and let it continue? Crap Shoot. I wonder how many folks are going to start collecting once this really gets started.

Sorry to go on and on. Great Question and the best of luck to you on May 14. Safe Travels and hope the rewards of the trip are safe plenty.

ChumpChange, I think you raise some very well thought out questions, I am going with 2-other people, The ride will be over 900-miles and while I do not enjoy crowds, I too will wait in line like every-one else. I also am bringing "plenty of Lincoln Stamps,(There is an 1-800 # any-one can call to order any stamps made and I did so and received them in 4-days.) as I am not going to count on the Post Office to have some for us all. I also know that "we" will be stamping our own rolls, 5-stamps at a table in the P O 'S lobby, this is a good thing as we can do a nice job placing the stamp on the rolls.
I know we can all get back in line as long as coins are available to sell.I hope come the end of the day when most "visitors have left, the Mint will allow the "hard core's " to purchase what ever is left.
I would like to return to N Y with a "load" of coins and I was thinking about letting my son have fun on ebay and "Let the bidding begin", this is all dependent upon bringing home a large supply of coins, for me I just would be happy with a "nice supply to hoard away" and admire with the rest of my collection.Has anyone seen E-bay and the prices for some rolls, I will make a prediction for the 2nd release and this is it will out sell, and out bid the 1st release, this is based on many facts, 1-the coin has not changed since 50-years ago, there are 4-versions this year( which my Dansco has not made room for)the coin is simply near impossible to locate except E-bay and the mints #'s so far are lower than the 1954-cent. these things plus the fact that a "full set of all versions will be worth a pretty premium."
This is not to mention all the other collectibles for this year, involving Lincoln, the silver dollar( Commemorative), the special Lincoln Cent set with the silver dollar( in the same alloy mixture of the original 1909-cent

You should spend some time on the buy/sell/trade forums. I have the 2009-D Log Cabin based on the reciprocal kindness of another collector who I have traded with and have two rolls of P mints on the way - one via another trade for a Kennedy proof and one purchased at a very reasonable cost of $4 shipped.

You can get them - at least in limited quantities - at reasonable prices - right here from other generous collectors. I don't want boxes and boxes - I want a few nice examples for my albums.

I am going to Lincoln City and if all ends well, I hope to be able to share some of my haul with others here as well as trade for "D" mints and future Lincolns.

Best regards,
Ken

For those looking to the medium/long term future with these 2009 Cents and all four designs.....I would just say remember the Coin World article about "drastically reduced mintages of the Nickel and Dime".....meaning they've "minted all they're going to for the year".
This can easily happen with all of the other denominations INCLUDING THE CENT. The "need" for more coinage is very very very low in Fed Resv. banks.....that's why they decided to cut the mintage numbers.
So, when people talk about scarcity, there are a few factors as of yet unknown IMHO.
One fact is that this first design Log Cabin Philly Cent is THE LOWEST MINTAGE IN NEARLY 60 YEARS.......So, there's some scarcity right there I do believe.
It's just when they take "all four designs" and combine the "projected mintage" that one can say "not scarce". But since each of the Cents are a different design, I look at them seperately.
But, despite all of these arguable points and opinions.... THE U.S. MINT "IS" DRASTICALLY REDUCING MINTAGE NUMBERS OF COINS !
And the Lincoln Cent total number of all four designs MIGHT just be affected too.....and so then you wouldn't ever have BILLIONS of these sitting in Fed Resv. vaults for years just waiting to be distributed to banks. And millions of the Cents remaining in BU condition for everyone to put into their albums and folders or hoard in rolls.....
Just my 3 Cents worth...

No, unlike the dollar coins or the State Quarters the Fed does no have a program to allow banks to specify certain dates or "only Unc coins" on their orders. The bank will get whatever is on hand. And the Fed operates on a circulated first, then FIFO inventory basis.

And just a little lower than the 1968-S cent, we all know how scarce and valuable those are.

Personally with all the hype that surrounded and till contiues to surround the first 09 Lincolns, I expect the second issue to just even higher initial levels, but I also suspect that availability will be greater and the higher levels will not be sustained as long.

When things are all said and done, I think All the 2009-Cents are going to hold a special premium, for more than one reason, 1st the change in the Lincoln Reverse in 50-Years, the fact there are going to be 4-versions for this coins reverse, the overall mintage tally is yet to be seen, but I believe it will be lower than coins from the past, for all 4-combined. Also this is a boost in the arm for cents, like the Quarter was for the State Quarter Program, not that the cent is in need for attention, It could not hurt the promotion for this coin, then there is the Special cents Set that will be out soon, and this set will, by it self hold a special premium, which reminds me I received the notification from the Mint the proof sets will be out around 6-1-09, I believe this set will contain the 4-versions of the new cent in the old "bronze"( copper/tin mixed planchets.
I think these coins will hold a modest premium for the 1st release, and each of them will do the same, some holding more of a premium than the others, Not to mention the fact that these coins are very difficult to obtain. what ever the case, for now this coin has many people "Hunting and Searching like never before".
When the dust settles, we will all see exactly how things will turn out, I just think it is Great to ponder the possibilities....
