Maybe the "vanishing nickels" are just due to collectors hoarding. I have been pulling every pre-1960 Jefferson I've encountered from circulation since 1972. (I figure I am not alone) Recently I started pulling pre 1964 (way to many 1964 minted). I don't encounter as many 40's or 50's as I used to.

Are both mints scarce for the 2008 nickel or is one more scarce than the other?

I have not seen either one in circulation, so I would say both are scarce!

I got a '59 D yesterday. Pretty bad condition, but it filled a spot in my album! I've also been seeing a lot of newer stuff in recent rolls.

I picked up a box of nickels yesterday. I got excited when the first 5 rolls yielded 2 silver. But the last 45 rolls only yielded 1. I also got probably 2 rolls of pre 1963 including one very, very nice 1962. It also yielded a 2008 p&d. So I am happy to say my Jefferson set is now caught up.

I've seen quite a few 2008 nickels in the recent roll hunting I've been doing.

Just to up-date my April 27 post: I still have never seen a 2008 nickel. Have looked through probably 500 since the last post.

Where do you live GaryBurke where there are no 2008 nickels ? Here in south Florida I get about 6 or 8 in every roll. Many more P mints than D.

I,too, was having a problem filling my hole in the Dansco for my 2008 D nickel after searching many rolls. Yesterday I went through 2 rolls and one of them had 20 2008 D nickels! I was shocked. Still haven't seen any 2009 nickels, dimes, or pennies in circulation or at banks.

I just went through LOTS of rolls of nickels. I found hundreds of 08s and have been finding them consistently in each box I'm opening. I've also found one bank that has rolls of BU 2008 D nickels.

I must say that since I first posted this topic, things have gotten worse!. In my last 2 boxes of nickels I have pulled out only 7 from the 40s, 10 from the 50s, 1 silver, 1 dateless buffalo and 7 foreign coins. I used to do a lot better than that with 100 rolls. Anyone having the same experience?

I'm somewhat surprised. Most people in most areas
of the country are reporting better finds in all de-
nominations. Though I've seen few reports on nickels
specifically.

There are some of the best finds in many many years going
on in the clad quarters right now. It looks as though a
lot of the higher grade and better date clads have been
getting released into circulation. These coins were only
set aside starting in 1999 so you won't find the best dates
in high grade.

I've even been hearing reports of a more silver quarters
turning up but you can't prove it by me since I've yet to
see one and I'm checking more rolls than ever. Other than
cents, of course, quarters are still the worst denomination
to search for silver.

It's hard to imagine what could contaminate the nickels in
your area to make these scarcer so I have to suspect the old-
er coins are being selectively removed before you see them.

Are you in an area particularly hard hit by the recession?

Perhaps people are starting collections since they are other-
wise idle.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
