The article just came out today and I read it tonight. It's hard to believe but it also says the Mint has a hiring freeze on and the Fed is hardly ordering any coins this year!

A low mintage year, it could be interesting. Remember, the mint sets won't save you since they are not the same as the circulation strikes!

I hear it, but what exactly is "low mintage" nowadays? would it be low mintage like as in the 1914-D with 1.2 million coins produced? Will it be like the 1931-S with under a million? Or, as I suspect, be more in the neighborhood of 500 Million coins produced? I have doubts that even with decreased demand we'll ever see 1931 happen again, no matter how much we'd like to see it happen. ~ Jim

It will be on par more or less and reletive with the human population needs. I'd guess that it won't ever be as low as mintage numbers from 100 years ago just based on how many people are here now.
And they are "full" of coins at the Fed.....people are turning in Statehood Qtrs. by the tens of millions.....the Pres. Dollars and Natives DON'T circulate...
Having said that though, with the economic trials and tribulations....anything could happen I suppose !
It'll be very interesting to see what happens with this news....

It won't help with getting "circ. strikes", but..... maybe the number of "Mint Sets" might be drastically reduced too !....those could be drastically"more rare" than previous years, just as "circulation" strikes might be !......if not this year because of "by law" statutes, then maybe "next years" Mint Sets might be a SUPER low mintage too !...just a thought.......hmmmmm !......

Does anyone know if we will be able to obtain the 2009 pennys nickels and dimes from circulation? If so I'm going to hoard these baby's as if there were 1914-D's

I agree with Jim- I don't see any way that this years production would even be remotely close to 1.2 million...There are way too many people. A low mintage these days would still be over 1/2 billion coins.

Production figures on some of the 2009 coins from the US Mint website through March 2009:

5c - 69.36 M
10c - 120.00 M
25c - 211.00 M
50c - 3.40 M
$1 Native American - 7.98 M - including only 700K "D" mints

If they don't need to mint any more, production figures will be lower than past years. I still don't think this makes them super rare, but they're not going to fall into your lap quite as easily as in the past.

The Jefferson nickel, if the figures hold, will have it's lowest mintage since 1951.
