Sorry for the photo quality, but I thought the same thing. Doesn't appear to be sanded unless they put new notches back on the coin. Also, the coin still has the raised lips on both sides. So if it was sanded, those lips would be missing. Also, under a loupe magnifier the notches on the edges seem to be smaller. I'm going to try an get a friend to get better photo's. Stay tuned.

Strike looks weak, but impossible to tell more. At the same time, a long stay in acidic soil may have achieved the same look — and resulted in loss of mass.

I'm thinking that the time it spent in the ground reduced its weight.

Good observation on shrinking in the ground. Although I don't think it would be possible for the coin to shrink so uniformly while in the ground. More likely the coin would have pitting or other dissolving characteristics. Not just simply shrinking like a balloon. Basically just falling apart or dissolving. I do agree that it might have been sanded down. But whoever did it, did a detailed job at adding new notches around the edges, which in my opinion would be difficult to achieve. Very precise under a magnifier. Then the question is why go through all the trouble? Still working on more photos. Thanks for the input.

@coiner222 It appears the edges were lightly sanded leaving the reeded edges still showing but not deeply. Hard to tell without a closeup of the edge. This would make it smaller & lighter than others. Edited by Sharks

Here's a couple of new photo's. Noticed how it's smaller next to a normal quarter. I have to believe someone sanded and re-notched the sides. The amount of sanding would have made the sides bald. Under a microscope, the notches are different than a normal coin. Normal coin notches are more contoured. Pretty good craftsmanship nonetheless. Curious how they re-notched it.   Edited by coiner222

a re-reeding by hand? that would take time and dedication - especially if they were trying to create an 'error coin'

Hi Dearborn. Yes. That would take some dedication to re-reed the coin. As to why. I have no idea. And how? I would think you'd need some type of machine. Do people actually try to create error coins? Sanding the edges would be easy, but to re-notch it would take some doing in my opinion. Sanding and re-notching to get a smaller quarter is the only explanation that makes sense to me unless someone has another theory. Still a mystery coin. I'll keep it as a unique coin.

Very interesting. The reeds look odd though. Maybe Mike would like to see photos and chime in. Mike needs to be PMed. You should put it in a 2x2 holder and keep it for now. John1 |

The reeds were not retooled. That's not even a thought. This coin like someone posted is a casino coin or just a well circulated coin. Nothing unusual here.
