Quote:I knew about the War Nickels having lams but was not sure about the regular nickels. John1 I have not seen many outside the War Nickels. I feel that where this was uncharted territory in silver percentages, they had more problems with the war nicks. The other direction though, with 90% silver did not seem to have as many issues. I know nothing about metallurgy, maybe someone that does can chime in about this.

Pretty cool find! It's the first time I've seen a Lamination on a proof nickel.
Errers and Varietys.

I did some research on Heritage Auctions last night. There is one proof cent sold with a lamination error, in the Error category. There were some proof nickels and quarters sold in their respective categories with a tiny lamination noted in the description. They were impossible to see on the low resolution photos of the entire coin.
It's hard to get a feel for whether small laminations are considered minor and irrelevant flaws on proof coins, or whether they just don't happen that often.

Apparently this question has come up before on CCF: http://goccf.com/t/341424Not sure how I missed that during my previous Google searches.

I agree about there not being many laminations on proof coins. Probably part of the issue of finding examples goes back to collectors and the grading companies consider laminations like a defect. I had one variety to ANACS come back as "Genuine". Collectors don't want to send something off and have it come back as "Genuine".
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups. We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.

A short update. Having exhausted my internet research skills on this coin, I reached out to Jon Sullivan. He said that sizable laminations are relatively scare on proof coins, and that this nickel has modest value as a collectible mint error. Glad I jumped on this one when I had the chance. I will tuck it away in my collection as a very attractive example of a lamination mint error. I'm sure I will eventually acquire a big lamination War Nickel, but it's nice to have a pristine coin showing the phenomenon, too.
