This is artificial toning - reverse below gives it away IMO.

It may be "enhanced" toning where AT was applied to an already toned coin.

Either which way I consider it to be suspect.

It looks to me like album toning, where the more toned side is closer to the page's edge giving it front line exposure to environmental intrusion.

Totally natural toning

Looks natural to me... starting at the rims and moving inward.

Natural toning, but it does look like it was under another similar sized coin for a long time while it toned.

The example is most likely straight graded by PCGS as the plastic holder shows up on the top of the rim, and the photo looks like one of Phil's at Great Collection. I am not buying off on it as NT as the example is circulated and has deep rich red and green rainbow toning around the eagle's perch. The color progression on the reverse is strange as both sides are different. If the example is NT, I would sure like to know what environment the coin was sitting in to get the rainbow toning on a Peace dollar.

Plenty of rainbow tones on Peace dollars.

And there are plenty of coin doctors making colorful Peace dollars. If a coin doctor can get a rainbow example into TPG holder, it is a big payday. Most Peace dollars that have rainbow toning also have blotchy toning. Did you ever wonder why in recent years that so many colorful Morgans and Peace dollars show up on the market? On TPG grading of toners, it is not about what is NT or AT, but what is market acceptable. PCGS finds the OP example market acceptable.

I would not buy the OP example and put it into my tonner collection as it does not check all the boxes for a toned original example. On circulated examples the vibrant toning is typically in the protected areas. I have been looking for a PCGS rainbow toned Peace dollar at a fair price to put in my collection for about 7 years and still looking.

it sure does look like the exact coin. right down to the rainbow toning and curvature of the toning as well. Even the background behind the coin is the same. Hmmm.

I still am leaning towards this being an original coin with some original toning that was artificially altered or enhanced. This, to me, makes it an AT coin.

I don't care if it's in a holder or not, I see what I see.
