I thought the same, it made the hole look more recent to me. When I examined it with my loop, I saw inside the hole it looked very aged, dirt and even some green mildew. I could never afford a problem free one, I just love the eagle on the back on this type.

I'm not opposed to a detailed coin, all depends on the price. Despite the hole, I think it has good eye appeal.

Most of my holed coins are on my key ring. It's the only way I can carry a Humbert fractional dollar in my pocket....along with a Gran Colombia escudo, a couple zecchinos, etc. They're better coins in worser condition, and being on the key ring doesn't hurt their value. In the case of zecchinos (Venetian ducats), they became decorations hundreds of years ago, and their central oval shape was imitated by shiny inexpensive oval "sequins". Which brings up the subject of "details" grades. For some reason "holed" is lower priced than "cleaned", but they all have the same TPG junk status. Like your 1795, the only way I could afford an 1865 gold dollar was because it had a hole in it. The hole doesn't take away its high R-4 rarity. @coinfrog, typo is that it says plugged. There is no plug. just a big hole. I contacted them, they said they could correct the label.
@adam126402, thank you sir. I bought it for the eye appeal, I like coins with dirt.

Holes were often punched into coins for carry on a necklace or a ring. This was common practice in the Americas in the 16th-19th century, as indigenous peoples didn't always have pockets. Sailors used this method as a more secure way to carry their money. These holes have historical significance, but are considered (rightfully) as damage. Personally, doesn't bother me much, as it is part of the coin's overall history.

Funny, though, how some don't consider Asian merchant chop marks as damage, but a carry-hole is ...
