. I probably will end up passing on it anyway due to price, but I will advise them to get it graded if there's a chance it is real.

Then there you go, Plus alot of people know nothing about grading a coin or the cost of doing it. Most people selling their coins need the money for everyday basic living and don't have the money to even attempt the grading process.

Agreed. I know the guy personally and wanted to get the opinions of people on here before I told him one way or another.

Looks OK, but not a particularly attractive example.

It probably looks a heck of a lot better out of the cardboard flip.

Tell the owner to flatten those staples.
What grade do you all think it is?
What is the owner asking for it?
What is the going value for it is said grade?

looks like an old cleaning to me. not the best eye appeal. everything looks pretty good being legit. i'd call it XF40. good chance it details. personally I would not purchase any coin, unless it was rare, if I wasnt fairly certain it would grade straight especially a coin in this range. a slabbed straight grade example is about $1000 coin.

The coin is a counterfeit as there is only one 1877 CC die pair that has the far right date and CC position. The stars are not formed correctly and the denticles are off on the reverse, and no comma behind the S in grains. The coin has a lot of what appears to be cast bumps.

The photos below are of the genuine 1877 CC die part with the far right date and tilted one in the date. The OP example does not match the tilted one in the date or the CC position.

Slider23, the other thing I noticed was the spacing between the log and rim on the obv at K8 seemed to be excessive. not sure if that plays into it as well or if that was just due to photo angle.

I also believe it's counterfeit. The missing leaves and branches in the olive branch on the obverse, the short fingers on the left hand, and the missing parts of letters on the reverse (the R in DOLLAR, and the M in AMERICA) are red flags to me.

zurie and panzaldi, you both are correct. Here is a matching die pair with the genuine far date 1877 CC and the OP example: When you look at them side by side, it is obvious that the OP is a counterfeit

The comparison image helped. It looked a little off to me, but I was not sure if my concern was photography induced or not.

Lots of details that don't look correct. I vote fake.
