1965 Washington Quarter Damaged Or What?

To CCF! It's PMD. Not sure exactly what caused it, but it's not an error.

a BB hit in the center, and quite possibly the edge is a BB hit also.

to the CCF When you have a divot on one side of the coin and a corresponding bulge on the other side of the coin, 99.99% of the time it's damage. It can't happen at the mint. The marks on the edge are just hits.

The main thing here is that when you know the minting process, then you know there is absolutely nothing in the minting process than can make something like this. What you are seeing is impossible to be anything but post mint damage.

While we all want to think we have an error, the problem is the most people nowadays looking for coin errors have never taken the time to find out what actually can happen at the mint.

It's a bit like someone saying they have caught a rainbow trout and yet have never even seen a picture of one, and instead they caught a perch. They are both fish, and anyone can tell what a fish is, but only research will tell someone what the difference is and how to ID them.

Instead social media has made a frenzy of people (NOT saying this is you!) thinking everything odd they see is a collectable mint error.

You have a typical BB gun damaged coin. This is well recognized by people who have seen these posted onto coin forums over the years.

You also are assuming this was shot at a distance when the dent is deep enough that it seems the coin was fairly close making it a lot easier to duplicate in looks.

BB guns have been around for well over 100 years and they're sold everywhere. Almost every kid that has ever had a bb gun has shot at a coin at some point in their adventures. I'm betting quite a few hit the target.
