I just use a simple straightforward spreadsheet. Each sheet is a series/denomination. Date, MM, grade, when where and how much when I bought it, and a when and how much for a recent greysheet.

I use Excel with the following columns from left to right:

Denomination, set, year, mint, grade, value (retail from Coin Prices), Third Party Graded if applicable, my cost, notes, qty, extended value, and location (binder, red box of 2x2's, safe, etc)

I loathe Microsoft and avoid using their products where possible.

For my main coin database, I still use the PrimaSoft Coin Organizer I mentioned in this old thread back in 2006.

Sometimes, when I want to sort or manipulate the data in ways the database can't do easily, I export the file into my QuattroPro 10 spreadsheet and use that instead of Excel.

I use both the "free" Coin World software that comes with my print subscription and download what I need to MS Excel where I can further manipulate the entries.

This works well for me but I'd like to add specialized software at some point that includes images of all U.S. coinage in various grades and can be updated to keep pricing current with Greysheet, FMV, acquired price, etc.

Right. I cannot tell if MS Office upgrades even matter.
Admittedly, I use Excel simply because I own it--and I know friends can read the files.

I don't use anything and don't really have a good record of what I have. Maybe I need to change that? It's kind of hard for me to do because I don't have a computer of my own.

I agree. One cannot beat the price, either!

Same here! Spreadsheets have been my friend for over twenty years now.

OpenOffice can read Excel files without problem. I know this because the Office2003 files I create open just fine on my machines that run OO. What is interesting is that I can open Office2007 files (DOCX, XLSX, etc.) with OO, but not with the version of MS Office I am running!

What's hilarious is that most Microsoft apps seem to run better on my Macs than on the Windows PC's I'm forced to use.

What's NOT funny is the plethora of excellent software which has been discontinued for the Mac because Microsoft dominates the market to the point that small companies (as for example the various entities which have owned WriteNow) can no longer compete with Microsoft.

I just did a home inventory (will take a year or more to finish I bet) called Frostbow Home Inventory. I just put the coins on that. I only have 1750 dollars MAX (that's at the lowest RedBook prices but for insurance, you'd use that value I think). they have a "Coins and Currency" option. You can put in notes in it.

I actually use Quicken where every coin (differing by exact grade) is listed as a separate security.
