It looks like a dirty tone but I see luster so I'm thinking its uncirculated from the photos

It looks like an AU55 to me, but I'll say PCGS gave it an AU58.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'll post the grade this afternoon sometime.

This is a hard one. I lean towards a very weak strike and some not great toning. MS-66

I'm with @ericgreen. I can't see a coin with this weak of a strike in a 67 holder, but I agree with ns's reasoning.

I see breaks in the luster on the high points. AU-58 is my guess.

The big reveal: I would have called this AU from these auction house photos, but it likely looks completely different in hand. 1887 Morgan dollars double in price from MS64 to MS65. I'm not sure I'd pay MS65 money for this example, especially from the pictures. Thank you all for your thoughts.

One of the toughest grading candidates we've seen in a long time.

For my learning. is it a weak strike that make the hair over the ear less defined than usuall? I often associate that with wear

Quote: For my learning. is it a weak strike that make the hair over the ear less defined than usual? I often associate that with wear I would say it is a very weak strike. Although the coin may technically be a 65, it seems that eye appeal was not considered. I can't do an in-hand evaluation since it is for sale at GC, but I don't see any redeeming qualities that could merit a gem grade. With all my opining about market grading, it looks like this one went through PCGS differently?

the limited marks and scratches keep it out of AU but I don't know how they can give this one a 65 with very little luster. maybe its the photos subduing it. but if it looks like this in hand I would not be a buying at 65 prices. to me it looks like an old over dip that has re-toned but most of the luster was stripped off.
