It looks like a narrow lamination to me.

Edited to add: the defects at the edge near the B show how deep the lamination goes. It was much shallower near the D and M below and peeled away right after striking.

Thanks for all the comments.. You guys have gone way past my knowledge. I tried to get a close up, but it's not easy. There is a lot of discoloration almost like brass verses copper. Lamination might be the reason? You can almost see what looks like a die crack.

Hmm, if there is a difference in color (which does not show in the pics unfortunately) then the lamination may not have peeled off right after striking, but much later, after the coin had a chance to tone a bit. I assume the rough area looks more golden, like fresh bronze, correct?
