Seems to have pretty clean fields - that mark on the eagles breast is pretty obvious and may make the difference between being a 65 compared to a 64.

I personally wouldn't spend money and send this in.

I'll say MS-64, maybe better.

due to the mottled toning, the coin appears to have been either stored improperly or cleaned and and not washed properly leaving some residual that caused the toning we see. my guess is probably both. the biggest indicator is very little marks/scratches technically the coin would be MS65 however it would never pull that grade imo due to the weak luster. I have seen MS64 ones very similar so i'll go with that.

common year so she would need to pull a 65 to warrant slabbing imo

I would dip this coin before sending it. It looks very clean underneath the mottled toning which would max it out at a 5 IMO. If it dips well a 66 wouldnt surprise me.

I would go 64 here which is a market grade because of the toning. Also this date comes nice and they tend to grade a bit harder here.

PCGS shows a population of 225,000 (!) Morgan 1881-S coins grading MS-65 or better. I wouldn't consider sending this one in based on what the pictures show.

Looks MS64/65. You can get a PCGS graded 64 for around $100, so I'd weigh that vs. your potential grading costs. If you do send it in, it might be worth it to use their Restoration service. It should only be $10 for a coin like this and might get you a higher grade.

it's one of the most common morgans. this is not one I spend $$ to slab. with the eye appeal you would not get top dollar for it in whatever grade it is since there are so many nicer examples out there

I'm with Adam_E. Currently a 65 may be higher after a dip (which I almost never recommend).
