I'll pile on for better pictures, especially of the edge. I suspect it may be in a bezel.

I agree with lcutler.
Being in a bezel would account for the magnetic reading and the extra weight.
Better pictures would verify this.

I realize sometimes the Mints quality control is a bit weak but not that weak!

The cent planchets are made at a separate manufacturer outside
of the mint. There is no way for nickel stock to be anywhere near there.
Your grasping at straws here.

JimmyD has a good point, the cent planchets are outsourced to a private company that creates and then plates the zinc planchets.

My only thought here is, are the blanks run through an upsetting mill before or after they get the copper plating?

Quarters on dime stock, half dollars on quarter stock, etc. All quite possible, as the clad coils from which the blanks are punched come from the same place.

Nickels and cents are different. Especially cents, since the blanks come for Artazn (f.k.a. Jarden Zinc Products).

Presuming your weight is correct, this could be a cent struck on a planchet derived from rolled-thick zinc stock. Alternatively, it could be a cent struck on a zinc planchet with an unusually thick layer of copper plating.

Interesting. I suppose I overestimated quality control at Artazn.
