NGC grade premature so forum can dive deeper into grade given 30 years ago its AU-55.

NGC + 30 years ago when maybe the coins surfaces were easier to read - yeah I could see that!

All those depression era coins are tough, especially in higher grades. This one has a decent strike, not too many surface dings, and is in that tough grade range. It's the eye appeal and concerns about ongoing surface issues that really make me pause, too. Do we have any idea where this coin was stored? It has a really mottled look and sometimes that can occur when coins are stored in humid environments (or worst case, in floods). My fear is that it may be irreversible and will continue to progress. IMHO, on a bourse floor, this one would make people hesitate if or when it came time to sell it. If you bought it, would you be happy? Or would you keep looking and compare it to other coins that you see later?

Im happy with coin and intend snapping it out for acetone bath and a drop of CoinServ then off to ANACS. Will post pics once I give it careful rinse. No problems with ANACS holder as I'm fond of coins sharpness probably UNC details will post ANACS grade. $563 after buyers fee and shipping.

hopefully they can clean it up. if not, it could be slabbed UNC PMD. with the costs at PCGS and NGC today, I dont have a problem with ANACS but havent seen a lot of conserved coins from them. will be interest to see on this one when you get it back. take photos after acetone so we can see the results prior to conservation.

Acetone rinse and classic coin conditioner applied revealing at best UNC details EV at worst AU details EV. Good lesson for me having handled so few MS Barber dimes I focused too much on strike, details, and TPG. Still like the coin very much and will keep however if I knew nthen what I know now my max bid would be $350ish not $501. I know the basics and very good at finding raw G - XF Barbers but AU MS whole different ball game. Thanks for comments will let you know ANACS grade - no need for TPG conservation imo as Classic Coin Conditioner is good stuff. Pics unedited in sunlight.

Panzaldi you have a good point about ANACS conservation I'm curious also and since I'm doing the 10 for $140 ANACS deal will pay the $25 for their conservation service. Will be intrsting to compare before and after.

Your angled photos after acetone and CCC are excellent. The surfaces are definitely better than I thought they might be from the original photos. Enlarged photos always make tiny coins like dimes look worse than they do in hand, so I think you are going to be OK here. I really do like the sharp strike on your coin. I don't slab many coins, but when I do, I use ANACS far more than the other two, not because of cost but because they are more consistently accurate on grades for many series right now.

Coins arrived in Englewood this a.m. with ANACS 5 day service. Will post grade...looks like a proof issue to me? the fields are too mirror like and the strike sure looks proof. Bet NGC mislabeled it as business strike. Could be wrong let's see? ANACS 5 day usually emails grade on day 4 late p.m.

ANACS graded coin today as a PF-63 straight. No home run just a bunt safe at first. I suspected a proof was hiding in that old NGC AU-55 holder. Thumbs up to Classic Coin Conditioner.
