Large date, wide border. Die clash and an about to crack die?
Possibly given an AU, details, damaged.

I'd say Unc details. Nice reverse die cracks, and other than the obverse damage, a beautiful coin!

I'm in the AU Details Damaged column. Other than the damage, it is a lovely coin!

From memory the heavy marks on the obverse were very smooth and flat to the touch.

- However, if there are scrapes and the coin is not really circulated you would feel the raised edges of the scrape no? Some of the metal would be displaced upwards and would feel a little sharp / at least a bump?

What if these are adjustment marks / other damage made to the planchet before striking?

with everyone regarding grade at AU details ( PMD) the reverse marks are die cracks. there is also another one at K7 reverse next to the denomination. there also appear to be an X across the shield but there is too much glare from you lighting to determine that accurately. they used these dies until the fell apart and in a most cases just switched out the one die with a different on so you end up with mismatched dies.

This is a JR-4 variety. The marks on the shield are a confluence of die cracks.

Hello,
Back for the update and I can imagine everyone will be pretty surprised. Honestly now that it's in a holder the marks don't seem as bad or as deep if that's any consolation. I think this is an example of textbook net-grading to an MS 62

It would be nice to see which auction company sent it in to NGC for grading. Too much damage in my book to be straight graded. To each his own.

I've handled raw 1814 dimes with a similar look (without damage) that graded Gem. First impression without the damage is 64 or 65. The coin is flashy and attractive enough to not place into a details holder, and it still remains collectable. I see a net grade MS-62 is appropriate here. I love the coin!

Contrary to Westernsky's opinion I sent this coin in myself and almost never grade anything American let alone as valuable as this so let's put the tin foil hats away.

Off of eye appeal handling the coin raw, myself and the dealer I bought it from said this was a 63 - 64 ignoring the hits so I can understand lowering it a couple grades.

That seems a very generous grade. Congrats!

Looks like more "market acceptable" grading from NGC. I'd be curious to see how this one would do at auction.
