2x Keelboat
2x Buffalo
2x Ocean in View

There were 2 each in 2004 and 2005. They commemorate the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

The nickels for 2004 had a peace pipe and a boat.

The 2005 designs are a bison and a landscape depicting where the expedition reached the Pacific Ocean.

Does that include the silver proofs also?

In silver proof sets the nickels are not a silver composistion, only the dime, quarter, and half dollar.

However, the mint sets in 2005 were produced with a so called "satin finish", so you could make the arguement that there where sixteen different coins produced in the westward expansion series if you don't include the 2006 "return to monticello" design as a part of the set (which I personally do not).

2004 Peace Medal and Keelboat design - P, D, and Proof S Mints = 6 coins

2005 Bison and Ocean in View - P circulating issue, D circulating issue, P satin finish, D satin finish, and proof s mints = 10 coins

The Westward Expansion Nickels are pretty common around my area (Colorado). I just found two of them in my pocket this evening.

Weird , I'm in Pa and havnt seen one for quite a while.Last night I checked through the Mrs change purse...a lot of change , whats odd was it was almost all bird quarters and only 2 nickels both monticellos. No new 1c's.
Im used to seeing almost all State Quarters and a few new nickels..not for a while now.

I very rarely see any of the Westward Journey nickels in my change and only recently completed that set from circulation.

I also agree that the satin finish coins are completely different from the circulating coins.

Don't know why but in Illinois I see very, very few of any of those special ones. Possibly to many people hoarding them around here.

I could see the nickels being hoarded or collected enmasse , there were some beautiful designs , the return of the buffalo on a US nickel alone was a joy to behold. Was the handshake /peace pipe one a throwback to those old washington peace medals ?
Ive kept every new Buffalo nickel I came across . . . 3 to be precise.

I have for some reason saved about 35 or so Bank wrapped and Mint wrapped rolls, mostly the Buffalo / Bison but I think the most valuable of the nickels is the 2004 P Peace Medal. Which I have the least rolls of.
I see all types regularly in my change and unless they look really super nice they go right back into circulation, almost all are P mints that I see in making change. Rarely see a D.

Denver Mint Westward Journey Nickels were and are quite common in
circulation in Denver.

In fact, I've been seeing high-grade BU specimens in my change this
year, some of which were "P"'s (BU "P" coins are almost impossible to
find in circulation in Denver!), which suggests that Mint Rolls have
been cashed in, due to the economy.

It's the Keelboat-D that I see the least of, as compared to 2004-5.
That is actually the lowest-mintage business strike coin for this
series.
