Marve65, (To bring up another point in this conversation, thank you BTW) There were under 240,000 of these struck on soft-gold. I don't think the die would flatten its form and deteriorate that much, IHMO....

Looks like it's time to open my "Numismatic Grading Standards" book

there are very few coins that you can apply a standard grading guideline to. one must take into consideration the series, mint (if there is one). gold is a different animal. weaker strike pressure. there are some markers here that the coin is MS and some that make it appear that it had some light circulation.

AU58 or MS63. I'm leaning MS

240 thousand was still a fair amount of coinage to be produced from a 1900's die.
"The number of gold coins minted from a single die in the 1900s varied, but a typical die could strike well over 100,000 coins, and in some cases, several hundred thousand or more. The exact number depended on the coin's size, design complexity, metal hardness, and production quality control."

A lovely coin regardless of technical grade. Other than the few hits to the right of the eagle, overall very few blemishes.

I can't make a call on light circulation versus uncirculated from the photos. There is weakness on the devices, and some of that is clearly strike weakness. There looks like some disturbance of the fields on the reverse, but the obverse fields looks intact.

The TPGs have been consistently inconsistent with gold. Before the start of the pandemic, gold with the contact marks seen on this reverse and through the feathers would have come back detailed. Since the start of the pandemic, I'm seeing more of them straight grade as MS-62s. Assuming that the marks beneath "ME" of AMERICA are contact marks, rather than graffiti (and I think they are contact marks), I could see MS-62 here, though UNC Details wouldn't surprise me.

Yes nickelsearcher I also have enjoyed this thread very much....
Now check what AI has to say about this coin. Not the best photos, but they are the originals posted by the OP here.

I know 45 hours is not 48 hours, but I'm not sure I will be up. Please forgive me the premature reveal. 3 hours ain't too bad, right?

In hand the luster really pops. It looks great. When I look at my own photos, I don't love the missing detail on the wing and on top of the eagle's head. I do like that the fields overall are pretty clean for a 63. I don't love but the deeper cut on the reverse, but I am guessing that is what makes this coin a 63.

Sorry for the glare on the slab. It's MS(63).

I do not see anything to make it AU, so I have it in MS territory. Now, did PCGS agree?

Looks like AI and I called it based on the picture the OP posted...
Some here judged it by, "it could be a weak strike", "it could be a warned down die". (Good Guesses)
On to the next coin....
