Nice coin. The obverse has some chatter in the hair, especially above the ear and above the eyebrow. There are some light contact marks on the cap fold, a bit of rash on the chin, and some contacts in the left and right obverse fields. Overall, the obverse is MS-63/MS-63+. The reverse is excellent, with some light chatter on the eagle's left wing (our visual right) and pin pricks in the field beneath that wing. There is a light rim contact at 12:30 on the reverse. The reverse looks MS-65. I'd bourse floor net this to MS-64.

This one is baffling. Please let me know if you see where this one was cleaned. It has full cartwheel luster. I had this one at 64.

They are misreading the light surface scratching on the obverse. That isn't from a cleaning. That's from the New Orleans Mint tossing the poor dollar bags around like sacks of grain. These surfaces are original.

I'm not convinced the piece has been cleaned.

They are the experts, but I don't see any spots of cleaning on this coin.

Quote: They are the experts we have seen way to many misses to peg them as experts. this is BS. as FC stated these surfaces are original. there is zero signs this coin was cleaned and I cant believe CAC beaned it as such looking at recent auction prices it would be maybe a $80 coin at MS64 which it should be about $100-110. there is not enough value to crack it out and send it back in. I think you need to just leave it be. I guess the bean helps

They get paid by top-notch companies to rate coins and are considered "Experts," something that I would guess all of us are not in this field. But we can guess and share our opinion on the coin's condition just as they do.

CAC will grade a rusty washer as MS99. Surprised they were honest with this one.

Follow up on this one. I went to a local coin show a few weeks ago and shared this coin with a trustworthy dealer. They suggested that there was a slight wipe on the chin that probably caused the details grade. I never saw this on the coin, but if you hold it at a specific angle, you can see that there is a slight discoloration to that area. I'm still pretty sure this would straight grade at PCGS / NGC, maybe not.
This was worth the cost for the education.
