If you are talking about the coin I posted above, it is not a DP#2. It was struck with a regular narrow 9 die.

is it true that the copper tends to tone in a more brownish color whereas the brass turns a more black color? I'm not sure where I heard that but since the subject is up why not ask?

when I find it I will post pictures of it. There is so much stuff out and about in my house right now that its crazy... I don know that I love the 1859 cent because of all the varieties, so I do check the junk bins of each coin store and pick them out even in bad shape. and I buy each one they have in higher grades as well and then just stock pile them. Hopefully I will be able to find the right one and get some pics taken soon. I can say it was more of a vf-ef grade. :)

How I knew it was different is I took all my 1859's out one day and laid them out in rows on my desk and was going to check the dates for type. and just that one stuck out like a sore thumb, in the areas it had tones it was a darker tone color than all my others and the areas that were still clear of toning were not the right color for copper. more of an ugly yellowish color. but I could tell it hadn't been cleaned because it no cleaning marks and it had the mint shine still intact mostly in that area. geez I want to know what I did with that now.

i know I saved it this time because I did have a 1969 lg date dime that I spent by accident so now I am almost neurotic about hiding the good ones.

Information on the weight and size comes from bank of canada archives:

http://www.bankofcanada.ca/currency...s&r=10&tn=on
their search engine is a bit slow, here is the mayn search URL; http://www.bankofcanada.ca/currency...ch_index.php
but search for 1858 metal, otherwise every paper bill comes up also.

The low weight on the Bank of Canada example doesn't surprise me. As I pointed out above, the weight on Provincial cents varies quite a bit.

The larger diameter does surprise me. I have examined four personally over the years. Although I didn't measure them with calipers, they all seemed to be the normal 1 inch in diameter.

I too post very frequently on the CCRS site (in my opinion, the best going for up-to-date info) and only infrequently drop in here to see what's going on. Vicky large cents and all their varieties are my specialty and I have over 3000 with nearly 500 1859's. The other posts from Bosox and others are right on. The minting process and alloy percentages in the planchets was not exact for the Provincial cents. 99+% of the 59's that look a little yelllow are just those that have had a harsh chemical exposure, intended or unintended. Most (and I say just most) planchets that are oversized are foreign copies. They were originally made to be 1 inch in dia (25.4 mm) and 100 weighed a pound when new .. by design. Those with wear will always be a little shy on the weight.
