So last night I sat down in search of a new hobby. Think I'm going to try coin collecting, so I started with a couple old coins my grandfather left me. Please forgive me if this ends up being a stupid question, I'm still learning what mint marks are. :)
I didn't pay much attention to the 1920 cent, but after doing some looking around on the Internet, I'm very curious about this 1859 cent. It appears to be a narrow 9, but what confuses me, and what I can't find anything about online, the 9 seems to be underlined. This isn't a scratch as it is raised off the surface. is this just an error, or do some of these cents have an underline? I'm off to work for a few hours, and I'll stop at a friends house for a good digital photo I can post here too.

hello morgantime and welcome
a picture would be great so we can help you out with figuring out what you have. Also though, if you want you can do a search through the canadian section of this forum and you will see plenty of posts regarding the 1859 cent and some have really good images and links to sites explaining the 1859 differences (there are many)
the 1859 cent is a very ambitious start coin :)

Thanks for the responce mallissa! I'm only looking at this coin because I've had it sitting around for a couple years. Never really thought anything about it until last night. Here's the pic of my coin. Yes, I did go through the forum already looking. I didn't find anything about that underline under the 9 though. After this one i'll start more simple. I picked up a couple boxes of pennys at my back today, and got a book at the library that should hopefully get me started on what I should be looking for.  |

Hi morgantime..  I think the underline is just a die chip, that sometimes happens on coins.  |

I would say the underline is a gouge like many of the others on the same coin.

something is not right here....
the reverse is "dark and dirty" and the obverse is red or cleaned.
can you post pictures of the coin in question, both sides, the complete coin showing?

to CCF Hopefully you will enjoy your new hobby. Looks like a nice example of a large cent. Too bad about the damage. It appears to be post mint. Good pics BTW. |

I would say its also some kinda chip or gouge. I think the coin wefindem posted is a whole different coin |

The area under the 9 is another gouge that has displaced the metal, pushing it upwards.
