I'm too embarrassed to check the machines. I want to, but worry about the social ostracism I'd receive if I did.
I really liked John1's use of the highlighting. Kind of a letdown when I did it though, a ?9? W?n ?r? ? ?d c?. I was hoping for a Pine tree Shilling or something like that.

I've never even seen a Coinstar machine. I'm told that a Walmart near here has one.....may have to check this out. Instead of dumping at a bank......maybe I could "trek" 50 pounds of coins through the giant Walmart parking lot and carry it inside to the machine ? Guess I'd be the "center of attention" for a bit, doing that..... How many do this regularly ? I know my bank would appreciate me "not" bringing in the coins to them ! But I don't know where a "convenient" Coinstar is.....

A little, tip: get to know the cashiers or even the manager of the store whaer the CoinStar is located.. Most of the machines have a jar inside for "foreign" objects that the machine rejects. Maybe they'll let you look through the jar and find something nice that you can buy at face value.
My best find was a 1865 Indian head, but it wasn't CoinStar, but another machine just like it at my bank.

I had to return something to Wal-mart one night and while waiting on line I looked over and saw some coins in the return bin. I walked over and put my hand in, there were so many coins it took me three times to get them all. I put the coins in my pocket and didn't check until I got home. No silver, but got just over five dollars in change. I now check the bin every time I'm in the store, but have not found anything since.

I casually eye the reject slot as I walk by and if I see something I grab it. Once the slot was completely full of cents (over 250) and I got them all. I haven't found any silver, but a few wheat cents and various foreign coins do turn up from time to time.

I liked the idea of sending one of my kids to check out the machine because I would feel weird doing it myself. but I would let them keep whatever they found, even if it were valuable. I did the same thing once after I received an ebay shipment. It was an autographed Harry Potter card. The card was surrounded by a bunch of "common" cards used as packing. I actually kept the cards and threw them in my dresser drawer. Several months later I was cleaning out the drawer and offered the cards to my kids, turns out my daughter checked out one of the "Hagrid" cards used as packing and it was worth $40!! LOL! She asked if she had to give it back. My loss was her gain. She was very happy. :)

Turned out to be a good day

Ive tried to keep this to my self cause I didn't want any competition in my area but I have found silver on a number of occasions in the reject bins of the "change only" toll booths. I don't know how many states uses them but in Houston they are all over. At the main toll centers the reject bins are sealed with screws, but on the on ramps and exits they are open. One day After rush hour I went threw and found $15 dollars worth of change, 4 silver quarters and two silver dimes.

I just got back from dropping off a movie at the local Red Box, which is right next to the Coin Star machine. There was 3 handsful of change in the Coin Star reject bin, totaling $4.36. Included was a 1958 Jefferson, 2 1940 S Lincolns, a BU 2006 Canadian nickel, 1999 Canadian Millenium August quarter and a 1985 British penny. My only other Coin Star find is a 1986 Bermuda dime.
