Quote: Dr pepper 'is' a Coke product, is it not?
If so, I guess you guys are okay in my book; just sorta on probation though (double secret probation). Okay, I guess I might have to change my mind about that: (Maybe you guys are not okay in my book after all). You have just broken probation.

Quote: Actually it was more a demand from cities with mass transit rail systems which at the time were typically $1 or $2 per trip. It was easier to have machines that accepted or distributed dollar coins than dollar notes. The 2009 Red Book states: "The size of this coin caused it to be confused with the quarter, and it failed to gain widespread public acceptance. No coins were made for circulation from 1981 to 1998. In 1999 additional pieces were made to meet the needs of vending machines." If such trivialities even matter, I would defer to the Red Book.

The primary vending use for small dollars are light rail/mass transit system ticket dispensing machines. I specifically remember the light rail system in St. Louis(MetroLink) in the mid-late 1990s, nothing was funnier than someone putting in a $20 bill for two tickets($2) and watching the person get mad when they got three or four SBAs and the rest in quarters I personally would much rather get back 18 small dollars than 72 quarters Duece coins would be even nicer but that is a looong way from ever happening here...

The original title of this thread :
"Sad story of Americans not knowing their coinage"
seems to have evolved into "Sad story of Americans not knowing their soft drink manufacturers".
(I seem to be the most guilty party too).

Okay, now that I have finished reading this incredible thread, I am going to grab some Ike dollars and 2 dollar bills and walk down the to the local Golden Arches and have fun paying for my lunch. And by the time I get there I will have made that difficult decision...Coke or Dr Pepper? By the way, anyone raised in America should know who Ben Franklin is.

Ben Franklin is that dude on "Man vs. Food" who travels around the country eating huge meal portions.

I know who Benjamin Franklin is: He's The Punctual Plumber! I see his trucks all over town! He was also a tireless advocate for the "Sugar Standard", and he's been rolling over in his grave ever since our sodas were 'debased' to mere high-fructose corn syrup! PS: Some limited-edition Sugar sodas are still made for 'collectors' !
