Vista has real issues with the QX5 I can't use mine on my wife's PC using the software that came with it. I have to use it through the scanner camera option in windows. Basically windows controls the microscope but won't operate the lights so you need to use SuperDave's flashlight trick or I use a desk light. In the control panel there is a scanners and camera option use this.

I should have listed that in things I've tried , too. When I tried to add device, nothing happened. It keeps telling me to turn it on.

I also went to https://www.digiblue.com and downloaded the driver for Vista, and still the same garbage.

These pics are "straight out of the box" with no adjustments. No extra lights. No raised coin. I just focused & go. I use Windows XP.

I don't know anyone who is getting acceptable function from this thing under Vista. Like I said, the software goes back to the era of the dinosaurs in computer years. Scooby Due, I hate to say it but your best bet might be to liquidate it on ebay (they sell for decent money) and buy a Celestron or something more compatible with your OS.

First thing I do with every new PC that comes past my desk is downgrade the OS to XP Pro. Microsoft does not advertise it but Vista licenses cover XP downgrades.
Maybe Windows 7 will be better than Vista it certainly can't be any worse, None of my peripherals or company software will run properly on Vista.

These pictures are without any adjustments thru a 2x2. Using Vista Home.
When you set the operating system on the QX5 you have to use XP.

Apparently, my computer skills are more limited than I thought they were. I thought I knew my way around a computer pretty good, but I guess not.

Don't know how to do this.

Don't expect color. You're not going to get color. In fact, I remove the color data from all my shots these days.

or this

or that.

Sorry, I'm just getting really frustrated. Seems like I'm getting plenty of answers, but not how to go about it.

Scooby.. you can choose to run a file in "compatibility mode" in the file's properties, which you can get to by right-clicking on it. This would be the exe file, not the desktop shortcut created during install.

The software is hopefully in the Program Files directory. So you would find the C:\Program Files\[QX5 Software] folder and look for the EXE that starts the software. Make sure the software is not running.

Right-click the EXE file, and select Properties.

Select the Compatibility Tab.

Choose XP in the list, and optionally select Run as Administrator.

Click OK.

Then run the software again and see if it's any better.

OK. Spent half of yesterday and most of this morning with Digital Blue on the phone. After hours of install/uninstall, new USB ports, downloading drivers and other crazy stuff - they have decided that my QX5 MAY be faulty.

They said they will run tests, and if it is faulty they will send me a new one. If it's not faulty and I have a software problem, they'll send me the same one back. What kind of service is that?

The thing that scares is me is if they take 2 weeks and determine it is my software, my window of opportunity to send it back to where I bought it may close. And their service isn't much better, they want to test it before they give me a exchange/refund.

So, in the meantime, my funds are tied up, I can't shop around for another one. I'm completely at their mercy and not very happy about it.

I told them on the phone that there were 10's of thousands of people on this website and that they would not want a bad review here.

I'll update you on their level of service in a few weeks.

Sigh, weeks.

Exactly. That's all I get now. No matter if 10x, 60x or 200x, and no matter whether I put a nickel, cent or the samples that came with it. That's the picture I get.

UPDATE: I sent the QX5 back to shoptronix (who is NOT an authorized dealer, by the way!). They received it on 04/01.

I just got an e-mail saying they have finally determined the equipment to be faulty and will be issuing me a refund within the next 10 days. Sheez!

I guess I'm at least happy I'm getting my money back and that maybe I'm not as stupid as this thread was starting to make me feel.
