I have seen herds of bison at Custer SP in SD, Yellowstone NP in MT/WY, and at Fermilab in Batavia, IL.

Shatsi, There are bison (buffalo) all over the country now. Most folks don't realize there are two distinct species here in the U.S. with a woods buffalo more common in the eastern states. I imagine with a little luck and a little internet searching you can find a few buffalo (woods or plains) right in your home state. The buffalo is a huge majestic animal that is entirely capable of taking care of itself from birth to death without the help of man and is a constant reminder of our history, both the good and bad, which the nation has experienced.
ScoutJim I have had just about everything on my table and have found NOTHING that compares to a real live plains buffalo and no hunt I have ever done will compare to the mid-1800's reproduction buffalo hunt that I brought in 2005 with. Reproduction clothing, primitive weapons, on horseback in the dead of winter! Meals were primitive, no modern conveniences, well we did have an outhouse, and living in a hole in the ground. Learned a great deal about the lives of those who dared to go west and what they had to endure and gained knowledge of the plains bison (buffalo) that I had never had the opportunity to learn before and I saw it all first hand! Truly a remarkable experience that I wish to do again some day!

I would like to thank everyone who responded to this question. I have found 5 Buffalo nickles in the inherited collection. I guessed they were buffalos because they were in the nickle jar, but you cannot read the dates. I was going to give them to my daughter to spend next time at the store - good thing I read these older posts before doing that. Never knew buffalos were worth something when you cannot read the date. Figured they were worthless. Learn something everyday!! LeAnn CFL Swine

Thanks, Crystal. Can you tell me what the low grade is? Does the fact that you can determine the date make the coin Good?
I'm guessing you're talking about good as in the grade. Right? Okay, as long as the date is readable it is at least good. If the date is distinct it could be bumped up to at least very good. In the other direction if the date is recognizable it is almost good. If you can't tell what the date is at all it isn't worth much of anything unless it is one of the 1913 mound type buffalos and even then you'll only get a few bucks out of it. If you want to know more pick up a copy of Photograde or the A.N.A.s grading guide. They have pictures of the various grades for just about anything made in the U.S.A. that you could want. A local library might have one but if you're looking at getting into coins at all I'd recommend buying at least one.

My dealer usually gets about $5.00 and under for his worn/dateless Buffalos,I'm not saying their worth that, but I usually hang onto my coins(any variety)because ,even if their not worth much now, they might be by the time my son (who will inherit these) is a grown man.Although,I've been thinking of putting up a few for auction myself. One being a 1931S in XF45,I hav'nt seen to many for auction on ebay,so I'm a little curious as to how it may turn out.Good luck,Diane.sn31.

Do you know a dealer who buys them? I intend to keep a nice set of Buffalo nickels, but I have many that are of lower grade than my best set, and I don't think I need to keep them for the rest of my life (not having any children to pass them on to).

Hi, Diane I can't tell you who will buy them, but I can tell you that the greysheet (the dealers' wholesale weekly) lists a price for a roll of dateless buffs. In the June 2 issue (I don't subscribe--someone was nice enough to give me a back date), a roll of dateless buffs was bidding $6.50 / asking $7. To give you a point of reference, a roll of good/better buffs was listed at $29/$31. So CONCEIVABLY, you should be able to go to a dealer or a show where there is a market for such things and get $5 for a roll of 40. But if a dealer doesn't have anyone to sell them to, he's probably not going to buy them. The best place to offer them that I can suggest is ebay. I hope this link works: http://coins.search-completed.ebay....finesearchZ1Wow, there are some crazy prices!
