Can't find if this has been mentioned already, but make NO attempt to clean any of the coins. Hold them by the edges only. And don't let them bash around in some box together. They don't appear to be in any kind of protective holder. Given some of the estimates you've received on the value of the American coinage, it may be worth going to a coin shop and purchasing the appropriate holders for the sizes of your coins. They should be fairly cheap. You would hate to detract from their value.

Quote: have lots of Morgan dollars ( a wide variety of dates) lots of piece dollars You need to post a clear picture of the Obverse and Reverse of each of these coins because the Morgan and Peace dollar series has whats called a VAM which can make 1 worn out coin that looks like a cull be worth thousands. A VAM is a die marriage between the Obverse and Reverse die and each of these types of coins has many thousands of VAM's associated with them. Some do not add value but some could make you rich very quickly and you could sell that one coin and keep the rest. This isn't a common occurrence but it can happen but there are some that will make a normal looking coin that would be worth 20 bucks worth a couple hundred just because of the specific VAM it is

to CCF Sorry to hear about your Grandpa. Your scans are okay in most cases. The scanner tends to omit the 'luster' of a coin and make it appear flat. If you hold a coin in the sun light and rotate, you will see what I mean. The Morgan you posted would be a good candidate for that. Compare to your scan. You also should get ahold of a 'photograde'ing book. That will help you evaluate your coins. You have to determine your requirements before you start selling. A hasty sell might not be to your best advantage. Keep those pics coming.

I am touching them with the white glove that was in the box :) I still am not clear on the VAM thing but will post all of my Morgan and Peace $ here eventually. I also found a few half dollars with liberty standing but they appear to be more worn than the Morgans etc. I am not cleaning anything. I will try to take some pics outside today with camera. Some of the coins like the quarter have colds on them. Very light but pretty. Blue color mostly. Is this something which adds to a coin or detracts? Thank you all

One other thing, my wife went to the book store and she saw several red colored coin books! Which is the one I want?
Thanks

As far as toning, a lot of collectors will pay a premium for attractive toning. Others don't like toning at all.
Also, just because a coin is worn doesn't mean it is not valuable. My most valuable coin in my collection is also one of the most worn coins in my collection. It depends how rare the coin is.

Note that the ' Red Book' is the retail value. Also you mentioned that you also have foreign coins. Are they from all over or maybe Canada? There is a whole series for that. Depending upon how many you have. Just post them on the 'Foreign' section, they can be identified there. Waiting pics

Thanks to everyone! I will be posting more pictures later today. I think I will start with the Morgan and Peace dollars and then the Walkers (is that the correct terminology for Walking halves?). I will then go into the other denominations. I have found lots of dimes as well. Thanks again.

btw, longgunner - I just got my 2011 Red Book from CollecTons for under $4! I don't know much about them, but I was pretty happy with my order fulfillment. =) Oh, and I'm a bit surprised it wasn't mentioned before: http://www.pcgs.com/Photograde/Best of luck!

I agree with SD. quick check for the ol "CC" would increase the value for a lot of coins.
