I agree there'll probably be a buzz about the Lincoln coin when it comes out because he is one of the most popular presidents but I don't see there being long term value there any more than the other new issues. If anything you could say that because he is so popular even more people will purchase/hoard his coins.

It always seems to me that new issues are all about perceived rarity and/or temporary shortages. It's fun and exciting when they first come out and people can't wait to get their hands on them and have a hard time finding them the price quickly climbs, but at the end of the year there's still been however many tens of millions made and once distribution catches up the flash in the pan goes away and makes way for the next years "hard to find" coin.

The other big attraction for people into moderns obviously is the slabbed super high grade and error coins and more or less a lot of those follow a similar path though they will end up with some lasting value.

The major distinction is whether you're the person making the money off of finding and selling the coins early or the person buying them at the initial super prices and watching them fall later. If you want to try to "make" money you can try and play the speed game but chances are you will get beat out by all the big dealers etc who order loads of coins every year and are probably most likely to get their hands on them first and have distribution channels to sell them.

I ask for a silver proof set every year for christmas because I like having a nice example of every coin for the year. I would advise doing the same, get just what you want to be part of your collection for collections sake and don't buy a bunch of extras for an investment and bet on anything suddenly exploding in value and staying there.

It would just be interesting to know what will be worth triple its face value a year from now. Is there an educated means of determining this?

[/quote]In 1999 the first year of the silver state qtrs sold for around 32.95 & now its averaging around $350 usd ! so I would have to say the first year of the silver america the beautiful national park qrs that would be a good guesstimate history does repeat its self & 2010 will be the first of them 05/27/2010 2010 United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set

As for the Abe so far, I have heard that an extremely low number of Lincoln Proofs are grading PR-69, let alone PR-70... There was supposedly problems with making them... So before the price jumps through the roof, I am jumping on one ASAP...

I dont see the park quarter silver proof sets jumping to even twice the release price. The mint will not have shortages of them as they did with the 1999 issue.

Captain kurk those hsn guys said the reason those 1999 silver state qtrs are so valuable was simply because they had been out longer than the rest of them & that they were the first in the series I just checked the Red Book on the mintages and like you said they are a lower mintage than the rest of the 1999 silver sets cant believe everything you hear from those guys thanks for the info.

the 99 silver set is valuable b/c they did not release the quarters separately. the only way to get the silver quarters was to buy the silver set. all other years offered the silver quarters separately

Thanks for all of the comments. I am not interested in making money in coins. I have a business for that. It would just be nice to not lose money on most of the mint offerings.

It is a little depressing to realize that I am on the bandwagon with millions of others who own state coins. I even take it a step further by buying all of the clad proof and silver sets. I bought the dansco that included everything. It's just weird to see the clad proof right next to the silver proof with no noticeable difference. I think the presidents set more than any other, showed how over indulgent I can be. Good lesson. :-)

Actually, the 5-piece silver quarter proof set did not start until 2004. The 5-piece clad quarter proof set was available from the beginning (since 1999).

Don't be too depressed about it ! The State Quarters expanded this hobby about EIGHT THOUSAND PERCENT ! And these coins ARE popular....which means that all of these youngsters who like them now and started with them, will put 60 years of coin collecting beyond them when they started and will have these throughout their lives, cementing this series for generations and a lifetime or two to come, at the very least.
How many Grandpa's and Grandma's started these for their 8 year old Grandkids ?.....or Parents for their children ?....or Aunts and Uncles for Nieces & Nephews ? .....etc. etc. etc. These won't likely just be chucked in the trash without even the slightest sentimental feelings or "collector" intentions IMHO. No...they'll be saved, admired, and valued for many reasons, with not the least being "numismatic". This takes nothing away from Classic coins, just an "addition to" or an "expansion of".
Like it or not, there will be a certain "longevity" related to the 50 State Quarter Program, which only enhances more "Classic" coinage as well in my opinion. It's kind of new beginning for a "new age" in this hobby.
Die hard Classic lovers who absolutely hate these......well.....I hate to be blunt but.....they'll die ! And this new generation will "add these" as a component to what they like, moving forward in this hobby and proud to have what they have.

I have been putting together a NGC 70 silver State Quarter proof set.

At first it was easy & not too expensive, I should have not waited on the 99's. I had to have settled on a NGC 69 set for the 99's.

The prices seem to be very strong & going up on all of them.

That said I have 3 more of the remainder to go, 2000 NH, 2002 Ind. & Tenn.

From my observations this set, silver NGC 70 State Quarters will be a very good investment. When I get the last three I will post my costs of acquiring it.
