Organizing a collection that size is a daunting task, but you sure do get a sense of accomplishment as it starts coming together.

Organizing mine has been on my to-do list for a couple of years. I find it's always more fun to search for new additions than it is to ogranize what I've got. I had a nice spreadsheet going, but failed to update it consistently over the past year. I'm thinking that this winter, when it's colder and not as much fun to go outside, I'll spend some time getting current again.

For myself and my collections...Is best summed up by...yea, you go with that, tell me how it works for you. I organize, then buy more then reorganize then start another collection, reorganize....you get the pattern I'm sure. I think That's why I like the dansco books...keeps the collection organized, focused, and helps prevent hoarding (yea right)

You sound like me.. I don't get rid of much, either, and I like them all! I was in the middle of organizing, but I just had to put everything away since we're leaving on our trip (supposed to have already left, but as usual I am running late ), and from the stash in the storage cabinet I realized I have way more waiting to be 'organized' (and inventoried) than I thought. I also noticed that the weight of the coins in the 2x2 pages are making them sag in a few of the binders - do you have that problem? I'll have to fix that when I get back - maybe some smaller binders would work better.. anyway, good luck, and enjoy.. it sounds like you have a great collection

I have a super heavy duty 5" binder that I keep the majority of my 2x2s in. I have only about 1100 coins though. It weighs a ton and is a bit heavy to sit on some one's lap and show them my coins. I am going to break it down into at least 2 smaller binders. I've found that you need the heavy duty binders to handle the weight. Rings on the cheaper ones just don't cut it.
Have a fun trip!

I feel for all of you. I gave up on binders years ago. I use 2 X 2 boxes. I sort my stuff by geographical area and/or colonials. I've got 3 14" double row boxes for German stuff. I've got 3 14" boxes for French and French colonies. I've got two 14" boxes each for British Africa and British Caribbean. I've got three boxes for Benelux, four for Scandinavia, three for Central America, three for South America. Etc, Etc, Etc. Smaller countries might have a 10" single row box. Smaller yet is stuck in a set of three misc boxes. I try to put the first copy of ANY coin in a 2 X 2, then, unless it is really nice, I keep duplicates in baggies in plastic tubs. I have six tubs, each one weighs so much I can barely move them. Duplicate of duplicates go into a junk box which I use for trading. Everything except my junk box is meticulously recorded in an Excel spreadsheet. I love my collection and have spent more hours working on it than I have spent on almost anything else in my life. Right now my desk is covered in piles of coins from different places, European in one pile, South American in another, ... I better make a really good will or else my family will do some scary stuff with all this "junk".

I prefer binders. It's easier to look at the coins, either by myself or with someone. I do use heavy duty binders. I found "extra wide" ones, so the pages do not stick out when the binder is closed. Another thing, I got the "archival" quality pages. They are somewhat brittle, better not drop one while filling it up with 2x2's, or be careful pulling coins out (if need to rearrange). But they hold well in the upright position, don't sag.

I prefer boxes for 2X2s. When you need to rearrange, it is much easier than with binders.

just my opinion, but a really nice way to exhibit collections is to put them in mylars, put the mylars in sheets, and put the sheets in big folders. LIke lookin through a book!

Thanks, weavus! Quote: ... neatness ... That's why I prefer non-staple 2x2's, and computer fonts rather my handwriting.
