I have a couple of these errors on 5 cent pieces. I am unsure as to the premium one would pay to buy one, but it is still a nice error and worth keeping. Especially if they are found at face value.

Hi gxseries, The 5 cent mistrike/broadstrike coins are pretty popular on ebay,they go for $30 to about $80 depending on how dramatic they are, I have 5 broadstrikes , I bought a few of them described as mistrikes but they don't have any reeding around the edges,so they were stuck out of the collar ( which from what I understand makes them broadstrikes ) Does your coin have any reeding ? |

That looks very nice! How rare do you think it would be to find one in circulation. I've never seen a coin (outside of the net) that is that off center.

In my opinion 5c [url="http://www.australian-threepence.com/blog/2008/09/australian-broadstrikes.html">broadstrike errors[/url] are the most common of decimal errors. This is probably due to the high mintage numbers of the 5c compared to all the other denominations. Errors are most often caught in coin rolling and sorting machines at security companies, vending machines and automated equipment so would be found before you get the chance to handle them in your change.
It's a buzz to find anything abnormal in your change!

In my opinion there is no such thing as a common decimal broadsrike error.They are all rare no matter what denomination

I agree Jono, they are indeed rare. But of the decimal broadstrikes they are the MOST common (without actually being common at all). Great find from change by the way, well done.

Hi,
One thing I would like to know,Has anyone seen any other type of Mistrike 5 cent coins ? ,I've only ever seen Broadstrikes.

I have some clipped 5c including a double clipped coin. I've seen a split planchet 5c, I've also seen a 5c struck on an already split planchet and I've seen a couple of partial collars up for sale. I am aware of double headed/tailed coins and someone posted what appears to be a flipped double struck 5c on another forum recently.

I've got 2 (I think) partial collars and some that I've identified as 'minor' upsets, but not sure where I've got them stashed at present. Also have a few with rim Cuds, and there are some years that have a lot of die cracks through the SD's on the reverse, Cuds in the mostly left side claws, plus a few die clashes. life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

That's a great error,i found the flipped double strike mentioned & it is an awesome coin,very very nice indeed. I did find a 2008 with Cud on T ( like bat wings ) & the are in AUSTRALIA. This is the only 1 of my 5 broadstrikes that I've gotten from circulation,in 5 years of looking.   Edited by appleangel07

I've found 3 broadstrikes, very similar to yours. Years are 2001, 2003 and 2005.
My database also lists a 1996 upset, but I can't recall (and didn't record) how big an upset it is.
