I have had the coi since 2001 when I cracked opn a roll of quarters at work one day. It was a fresh roll from the people we bought our change to run the store with. It was right in the middle of the roll
I saw it and bought it for face. so I have been holding it for five years.thats why it has darkend the copper which normally would be covered by the plating like on the obverse

Copper is much morte reactive to the environment than the Nickel plating,, If you touched the surface with your fingers and the coin laid out in an area where it was subjected to temp and humidity changes the copper will definitely darken and tarnish.

This is probly why the coin only graded at 61.

Very cool error and well worth the face value cost !!

I am not sure right now according to 2005 coinage magazine NO vermont errors exsist. because of that I have no basis on how to price for sale. so for now I think I will sit on it for a while at least

Go to fredweinberg.com for more info, he is an error coin dealer.

from FAQ:

I have a quarter that is copper on one side. What is it?

Since 1965 our dimes, quarters, halves, and dollars are made of "clad" material. This is a copper core surrounded on both sides by a cupro-nickel layer.

Very often the clad layer peels off the coin before or after it is struck. On dimes and pre-1999 quarters, "Missing Clad Layers" are worth between $10-$25. On States quarters, depending on the condition of the coin and the color of the copper side, they are worth between $100- $200. Do not clean your coin - especially the copper side. I do purchase these coins on a regular basis and would have to see your coin to give you a firm offer.

Personally, I would keep the coin. Interesting that you don't know if any others are out there. If it is worth 300 now, I can't see there being a lot of them out there to drive that price down. but what do I know?

probably because of the grade, when he hadn't seen it raw he was probably expecting to have a beautiful copper color on the reverse and when it came back a ms-61 he either thinks its pretty bad looking or something like that. If he wants it raw crack it back out of the slab and sell it to him for 450 again

I would put it on ebay and cross promote the heck out of it and run the auction for as long as possible. If you have a price in mind, then put a reserve on it but I wouldn't put the reserve to high as to discourage bidders.I found 99% of most coins do better without a reserve.
Very cool coin.
