Sorry for being so late to respond Susan, my computer is on the fritz and I just was able to log onto CCF. The only thing I can say about the coin was I bought it from a very reputable firm in Denver over 20 years ago and basically, it has not seen the light of day for that time period. I would buy and then put away, not like our enlightened collectors of today who are very knowledgeable and very thorough on looking at all coins. I have some Morgans that have some VAMs and the only I know that is because of this forum. I can only say that the mint mark on the dime did not experience any physical damage that I could see from looking at it with a 16X glass. I would be open to suggestions on the path that I should take to get this coin verified by a reputable iddividual. Thanks for the help Susan and Bobby. Berry
Forgot to add that I purchased it as a 1931-D, I think the grade was EF!!!

Susan You got to see this coin, I would be interested in your opinion ? Hi Berry Im not sure I understand what you mean by (verified) ? If you want some form of attribution for the mint mark ? I'm not sure you will find a TPG that will attribute something like this. This type of anomoly is not something that would be repeated on other coins, wherein the coin would become a variety. Rick

A filled in D most likely. It does look like an (S) over a (D). I have one that is not listed. what is going on at the bottom on the reverse, from the picture it looks like the remnants of some one trying to alter a coin. I have a few of these that are on common date coins.. (practice pieces) maybe. Also the mint mark seems to be quite big. but by placement seems to be in the right location..

I noticed the area below the D also Jim, But Berry said under 16X the coin showed no damage,I would need much more magnified pics to tell if that area was the result of mining to alter the mint mark , or for that matter to add one.
The more likely alteration would be a D over an S .

I WILL BE SENDING THIS COIN OFF TO A KNOWLEDGEABLE PERSON WHO WILL BE ABLE TO LET US KNOW WHAT THE STORY IS ON THIS COIN. I WAS KINDA REMISS WHEN I BOUGHT IT BY NOT CHECKING IT OUT FIRST, BUT I HAD PURCHASED A LOT OF COINS THROUGH THEM AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE STORE. I USE TO STOP DURING MY LUNCH HOUR AND MAKE A HURRIED UP PURCHASE AND NOT REALLY INSPECT WHAT I BOUGHT AT THAT TIME.

I'll be honest, this coin looks like it spent some time on a street in Milwaukee during the slushy snow spring months. Someone ran over the coin's mintmark with studded snow tires before it was picked up and taken out of circulation... In short the coin appears to have some post mint enviromental damage and has the (D) mintmark mashed a bit. Easily a $10 dollar coin

Well Bonedigger, you may be absolutely correct, and for that reason, I will get an independant third party opinion who is knowledgeable and has no axe to grind. Stand by Bonedigger until all arrangements are made (couple of weeks) and we will both find out. One thing though, I don't think they had studded tires in Milwaukee in 1931, did they? Thanks for the opinion Bonedigger,
Berry

Relax buddy, nobody has an axe to grind here. Just offering an opinion when asked about the mintmark. The coin could have been damaged at any point between 1931 and lets say (when you bought it) 1980. There are some VERY knowledgable individuals who have responded to this thread and I'm no slouch (VBG) myself when it comes to Mercury dimes. That 1931-D you've got there has a total mintage of JUST 1,260,000 which is less that the 1926-S and ONLY 30K more than the (Much Heralded) 1921. Hang onto it! Take Care Ben

Hello Bonedigger, I think you may have misread my post, I totally agree with you and that is why I want someone knowledgeable to look at the coin. I certainly don't have that experitse or I would have shown/advertised the coin as to what I declared the coin to be. I thanked you for your opinion and thank you again, but still don't think they had studded tires in Milwaukee in 1931 and that is my opinion. If you disagree with what the third party person states about the coin, let me know an I'll send you the coin to look at also, since you are no slouch when it comes to Mercs.
thanks for your input, Berry
