Looks like a D to me. it's rounded all the way up, I would think an S would be more of a curve to it at the bottom.

Its a D ,, It almost looks like a piece of scrap was struck into it .

Sorry for being so late to respond Susan, my computer is on the fritz and I just was able to log onto CCF. The only thing I can say about the coin was I bought it from a very reputable firm in Denver over 20 years ago and basically, it has not seen the light of day for that time period. I would buy and then put away, not like our enlightened collectors of today who are very knowledgeable and very thorough on looking at all coins. I have some Morgans that have some VAMs and the only I know that is because of this forum. I can only say that the mint mark on the dime did not experience any physical damage that I could see from looking at it with a 16X glass. I would be open to suggestions on the path that I should take to get this coin verified by a reputable iddividual. Thanks for the help Susan and Bobby.

Forgot to add that I purchased it as a 1931-D, I think the grade was EF!!!

Susan You got to see this coin, I would be interested in your opinion ? Hi Berry Im not sure I understand what you mean by (verified) ? If you want some form of attribution for the mint mark ? I'm not sure you will find a TPG that will attribute something like this. This type of anomoly is not something that would be repeated on other coins,wherein the coin would become a variety. Rick |

A filled in D most likely. It does look like an (S) over a (D). I have one that is not listed. what is going on at the bottom on the reverse, from the picture it looks like the remnants of some one trying to alter a coin. I have a few of these that are on common date coins.. (practice pieces) maybe. Also the mint mark seems to be quite big. but by placement seems to be in the right location..

I noticed the area below the D also Jim, But Berry said under 16X the coin showed no damage,I would need much more magnified pics to tell if that area was the result of mining to alter the mint mark , or for that matter to add one.
The more likely alteration would be a D over an S .
