Bidding's at PhP5,100 = A$130 or US$100. 7 bids so far. The seller asks that there be "NO JOY BIDDERS PLEASE". I don't think they've got anything to worry about - the winning bidder isn't going to have much joy if/when he/she ever finds out it's fake...

If it's a fake, shouldn't ebay be informed of this and the auction pulled? But with ebay, I musn't get my hopes up. Anybody want to try and convince ebay that the coin is a fake?

Since there were only about 15 made and they're all proofs, I'd bet a wooden nickel it's fake. 1804 Draped Bust Dollar

Actually, he's selling it as a cent. If it were an 1804 dollar, I doubt anybody would be stupid enough to bid on it.

Yeah, I understand he's selling it as a cent. This is a frequent scammers ploy. If he were to list it as an 1804 dollar it would be yanked within 24 hours. This way is less likely to be found out, he'll get the people that go "OH my God, this guy has no idea what he has!" that will bid it up. There goes another counterfeit on ebay. The coin is absolutely a counterfeit 1804 dollar.

Real Fake Just take a look at a few of the areas I circled, for starters.

yes, those do scream out to be fakes. That and the fact that you'd have to be out of your mind to sell a raw 1804 dollar on ebay.

I reported the auction to ebay.ph this morning. I received an email that the appropriate action had been taken, however the auction is now showing as a legitimate ended auction which means the winning bidder is going to be held responsible to complete the transaction or risk a negative feedback rating. I sent an email to ebay.ph to this effect. We'll see what they have to say.

Well, of course I never heard anything else from ebay.ph. They also have not pulled the auction yet which would release the winning bidder from completing the transaction. I have no idea what "appropriate action" they could have taken since the seller is still selling. I'm very disappointed - not surprised, but disappointed.

I actually came across a real 1804 large cent. Worn VERY badly. I sold it to someone and they LOVED it. Looking back now, I wish I would have kept it.

Someone who bids just to get the price to some unreasonable amount and then doesn't complete the transaction. There are people who use that method to stop these fakes from being sold as genuine. Unfortunately, after 3 NPB's, you get booted off ebay. Many of the sellers don't complain because they know they're selling fakes, but sometimes they do.

I got an email back from Lesley at ebay.ph. According to her, the listing was not pulled because it didn't violate any of ebay's policies. I guess that means that it's okay to sell counterfeits on ebay.ph.
