VF-35 looks about right!

(If my Overton is close I think this one is O-110 (R2))

A real beauty!

My expectation would be a Genuine holder. It's a nice coin with VF details but has been cleaned and I doubt PCGS will grade it. I could be wrong though and please let us know what happens.

I think PCGS will let it slide through even though it has been cleaned. Real grade is VF-30 to VF-35, but PCGS may give it EF-40.

Sadly, I did not capture the traces of luster there with this photograph (taken in 2007 before I moved to China). It does look like a bit of a weak strike--if it gets an EF(40), I'd be ecstatic!

I would be too. TPG can be lenient on older Bust coinage and this is a good example of a piece that could get a break at PCGS.

P.S. If it doesn't grade, I would crack it out of the holder and let it re-tone a bit then try again next year.

Thanks, busthalf, it really does look better in person though! It is one of my favorite type coins (and maybe the best $575 I ever spent on a numismatic purchase) and I am hoping PCGS will have some high praise for it!

I am sure that with your enthusiasm for this series you have seen better though...

I'd also give it VF30 Details. Genuine holder is also my guess but a great looking coin nonetheless ;-)

I got this half dollar back from PCGS today!

The photo I took 3 years ago does make the old cleaning look more distracting and prevalent than it really is. In the approximately 8 years I have had this half dollar, I don't think it has done much, if any, toning.

Still, the results are not what I was expecting, despite knowing this coin is a weak strike. Check it out:

It probably caught a break because of the apparently luster on the coin, and you are correct that it does not look nearly as 'cleaned'. Definitely a weak strike, but still may be overgraded. Either way, impressive buy!

Congratulations! You did very well on this piece! The pic in the slab does look a bit more toned in the center of the obverse. The 45 grade is a surprise to me, but pleasant surprises can be very nice indeed.
