B12, I looked at that area closer and I think you may be right at 64.

Man, I sure wish my morgans looked remotely close to these you all have been posting....
I mean, how the heck did the people of the 1800s know to keep these coins UNC?

A significant portion never came close to circulation, they just sat all bagged up in Treasury vaults until being sold off in the 1950s and 60s. That is also why you see so many Morgans with fantastic natural rainbow toning- it was caused by the coins pressing up against the canvas mint bags for so many years.

I would be gutsy and say an MS65...chatter or not. However, I know that it's a 64 because well...that's my little secret. Let's just say...you have a 64 habit!

Not at all sure how I missed this Morgan. I cheated a little and snuck a peek at Susan's blown up images. Based on them, I'd go with MS-63 or -64 (I prefer the latter). Just a little too much noise on Liberty's forehead, neck, nose, chin, and the obverse field to get up to MS-65 in my opinion. It has gorgeous luster! I could be wrong and am often am, so it might go higher; I would be disappointed if it went lower. Also, there is no reason why PCGS would need to use this Morgan to lower the Bell Curve on this date in its Population Report. Regardless, it's a beautiful coin!

In your original post, you did a little image manipulation to black out the PCGS slab outline? Some of those marks could have been on the plastic. With my Carson City Morgan series, my target is also at least MS-64 for all of them, but have one or two MS-63s (financially feasible to upgrade) except the 79-CC, 89-CC, and 93-CC for which I will have to settle for less (NOT financially feasible ). Getting a complete Morgan date series is a lofty goal, especially in Mint State condition. I thought about it, but decided I wanted to expand my horizons outside Morgans and am now planning a type set for cents, nickels, dimes (or dismes), and maybe quarters, looking at 19th century only (maybe). I think I also mentioned I want to make a complete reference set of all possible grades (coin immaterial, but dollars preferred) from P-01 to MS-70... all in reasonably affordable dates. Actually, my REAL goal is a complete type set for all US coins. That would put me up there with Eliasberg.

Fred, the original pictures were the sellers pics. So,not sure what he did when he took them.I wish I could take a picture that good. Yep,a MS Morgan date set is a goal I cannot reach with the 1894,95 being in the thousands of dollars,so a couple will have to be in the XF-AU range. Still a good set thou. WOW,CC's being even harded & more expensive to collect.I wish I had more of them.Maybe my next project. Of course SuperDave and Bryan almost have me convinced to go after 1878 and 1921 Morgan VAM's.

I had a MS date set and started all over and now most (well cant say most of them, but definitely a few of them are his now) of my coins reside in TLS5933's collection and a few others but he has a few of mine, because I got the wild idea of wanting a MS-66 and above set now. I may get somewhere if I could stay away from all these dad burn 1878 VAM's, I start saving up to get that real good MS-68 Morgan and POOF I see a 1878 VAM that I just gotta have and I have to start over with my funding. But at-least I did get the ONLY 1878-S that NGC has graded MS-68PL which is actually the only 1878 Morgan NGC has graded above a MS-67 level so I am pretty stoked about that but I can tell this 66 and above set will be a long and twisted road

WOW Bryan, I don't think I ever saw a MS68 Morgan. Did you post a picture of that here? Seems a person always gets side tracked by another "must have" coin when your trying to finish a set. but 1878 VAM's isn't a bad obsession either.Lately when I see a Commemorative,I'm like a one eyed dog in a meat packing plant.I can't get enough of them. just part of the hobby I guess.Always something to collect.

The single highest Morgan I have ever seen was a 1880-S and it was graded MS-69PL by PCGS and that was only in pictures, it was actually on ebay and bidding went up to $76,000.00 and the reserve wasn't met
