There is only one way to get a true "first strike" coin and they are available from the US Mint. You can buy one of the used die sets at $34.95 a pop! The die set comes with one of the first coins produced with that particular die making it a genuine "first strike". Although the main selling point is not the coin but the die itself

Ah yes, the FDC covers! I had forgotten about those even though I have a few. The would surely quualify as "first strike" as well.

I wonder what impact that article is going to have on the value of the first strikes. I think there are going to be some upset people when they read that. I'm glad I'm not one who fell for that marketing gimmick.

Thanks for the post. I think it's disgraceful that the TPG's have involved themselves in something like this. A total rip off from companies that are supposed to be completely unbiased when it comes to coins. I wonder how they will now justify the "first strike" designation they gave to those coins? It will be interesting to see if they start back peddling now that the US mint has made this statement public.

I can imagine a lot of folks will not only be upset about this but demanding their money back! I know I would. Some of those supposedly first strike coins were sold for ridiculous amounts of money. This really makes the TPG's look bad. I am so glad I never bought into the hype. Does anyone know if any PCGS or NGC has made a response to this yet?

Im sure they knew,a long time ago.I remember the coin vault guys with a big bunch of bull about how they investigated and talked with the Mint to 'assure' this First Strike was the reality.Got Coin Age mag yesterday, with a story about the T.V. hucksters. The coin vault buys esclusively from Silvertown.

Yes BB, according to the US Mint website, the FDC covers contain coins that were minted on the first day of production of that coin. The cover itself is postmarked on the first day of issue. For instance, the Peace Medal nickel FDC cover has two nickels minted on January 20, 2004 and the cover is postmarked March 1, 2004.
