Wow. That's a big strike. 66 is Condition Census for this coin. A TPG might be hesitant to turn an $800 65 into a $2000 66 by giving yours that grade, but in your shoes I'd find out.  |

The coin came in a Capitol plastics holder and included an ANACS cert from 1982 identifying the coin as a proof graded 65/65. In-hand it is not an obvious proof since there is very little cameo contrast and the fields have a satiny rather than mirror finish. The strike is very sharp which does support a proof diagnosis I suppose. A business strike 65 is worth more than a proof, so I'd be very pleased if it turned out to be a misdiagnosed business strike. I wonder what PCGS would do if I were to call it MS rather than PR on the submission form? Would they go ahead and grade it as a regular issue or would they first make a determination about proof status?   Edited by Jaobler

Assuming the coin is raw .... that is un-slabbed ..... you do not have to state a grade when submitting to PCGS. It's their job to figure it out.  You do have to state an estimated value for return insurance .... so pick one assuming MS65. IMHO ...... this lovely coin will be graded by PCGS at PR66. PCGS has only graded 16 in 66 and one in 67. Dare I say this may be the one?

I sent this coin off to ANACS last month. They did identify it as a proof but only gave it a 64. I certainly thought it was solid for a 65, but so it goes. I'll post a shot of the slab when it comes back.

Wow, I agree- my first glance at this coin was MS65 and then looking at it more closely MS66 (or PF 66). This is one nice beauty and ANACS robbed you, in my opinion, but how many times will you play the submission game? It gets pricey to keep playing it!

What made you send it to ANACS instead of PCGS in the first place- you originally said you were going with PCGS?

I wanted to send my rotated die Kennedy to ANACS since the price to certify errors at PCGS is ridiculous. I needed 5 coins to slide in for the economy rate and decided to see what ANACS would do with the nickel. They apparently didn't like it as much as when they certified it back in 1982! If and when I put together a PCGS submission I'll consider cracking it out for that TPG to take a shot. |
