I've never seen anyone contract "substantiating" before. That's gotta be some kinda record.

Not too sure about VAM-16, but neither are they. There are two claimed obverses for 16. This coin resembles the first, in terms of date location, but it lacks the doubled ear - I don't know if that's a smoking gun or not. Further, the mint mark more resembles the second coin at VAMworld, were the obverse more resembles the first.

it is as it is, and as usual, it takes others to post even the least important info even for the common VAM's. and even less at times for the important ones.....vams by description or to few photo's leave tpo many unanswered questions......for this year of 23 or so vams it should be to simple of things, yet here we are.....GN all
I do enjoy your conversations, and can't wait to see what NPL's coin turns out to be....(I think its NEW) yooohooo!!

I'm trying to follow everything you say about the coins, but it's quite hard for a rookie. Thanks for re-posting in smaller size!

Yes, we've searched my grandpa's house quite thoroughly, although there are some places left to look at. Tomorrow I'm going to check under a newer section of the floor in the attic.. Which he has nailed quite much.. hmm.. ;) It's just so hard to know where he'd put everything... I mean we can find some stamps right in the middle of any book in any bookcase or box, or even coins.. However I wish to find as much as possible before they get too much damage to moist. It's an old house and he has always lived here so I guess there are more hidingplaces than we know.

I will take a look at acetone for that coin as well. I think we have many many many coins that might need acetone or similar.. I've bought a new spotlight lamp for coin picturing. Hopefully I won't need to have the spotlight so close so it gets overlighted. I'll try some with black background as well!

Talk about effort with sorting the coins.. We have 3-5x more stamps.. That's A LOT of work. ;)

Sounds like you are having fun searching.....I wish you luck in you endeavors, but I do not envy you in your toiling....Very nice to have you here....I hope that we will be able to arrive at positive identification on at least a couple of your posted coins soon....the differences between die varieties are often microscopic, so sometimes it is very difficult.

Yeah it's fun but I think most of the coins are already found. I'm just surprised that he had as many as 25k coins.. Just being a private little collector.. well for 60 years or longer..

Aye, I've noticied that the small details are very important when "VAMMING"! That's why I seeked aid here. I've posted quite a few topics already but will probably be posting a great number of chinese/japan/korean and similar coins which I have no clue how to ID properly.

I have a question, I have some coins from 1700-1800 from different countries all over the world. Would you recommend a Krause catalog or are there any other alternatives for world coins 1700-1800? I already have 1800-1900 and 1900-2000 Krause, and I use them for IDing my foreign coins. They aren't that cheap to buy though, so are there any cheaper alternatives?

Thanks. Keep on VAMMING!

Your local library may have one that you can use in house if cost is a factor. If you plan on following his legacy buy the book!

Well cost isn't so much a factor when it's just a book, but I don't have that many coins from 1700. Maybe the book is worth more than the coins ;)

I doubt that you will get a satisfactory answer to your question here on the Peace and Morgan dollar VAM forum....this forum is very limited in its scope and interest.....Most of the folks who could give you a good answer to your question do not visit here.

Might I suggest that you post your question on the World Coin and Commemorative forum? I really think that you will have much better luck there as those folks will be able to identify and evaluate your world coins with just a picture rather than your hunting down and buying a book for what seems to be a one time interest in these coins. (Keep that picture size down there as well though) and good luck with it.

Perhaps so. A much cheaper alternative would be to post some of them here.

I have Krause from 1600-2000, as do many others whose experience far exceeds mine. Use the "World Coins and Commemoratives" forum, and post them in batches of 4 or 5 so you do not start multiple threads which displace those of other members. We'll be happy to help.

Smaller pics, though, please.

Okay! Thanks for your help. I'll have to count my number of 1700ies and see which solution is the best.

I sure will keep the size down. :)
