Magnificent feat! So few ever complete a Morgan dollar set by date and mint mark. You are to be congratulated. You have my most utmost respect for your accomplishment!

That is way cool Ralph! Building a complete collection of Morgans is a feat that has not been reached by many numismatists. I started out building that set, but in mint state. I was a little premature when doing so because I didn't really think realistically. Some of those mint state Morgans can be quite prohibitive as you know! I have most of the common dates now and am at a stand still now as I haven't purchased any Morgans for several months. I started out bright eyed and full of fire and now my fire is down to a small flame! Reading about your accomplishment has inspired me to keep going and to understand that to amass any collection takes time, patience and money. I will resume acquiring one Morgan a month as that is all I can afford to buy right now. It looks like I'll have to step down and go for some of the circulated dollars though, but I don't mind as I feel they are just as beautiful circulated. They are my favorite type dollar coin. Congratulations on accomplishing your quest and good luck on your new quests. Thanks again for posting your message because you have motivated me to move on with mine!

Congratulations! I love circulated coins, so your set is a great accomplishment. I look forward to see yours and others posting photos in the Monster Morgan Thread.

coinczar - (inspired? motivated?) Two words that always sound nice. I, too, started with big plans, but soon came to realize I'd most likely never complete the set unless I set my sights a mite lower - I did, and I did. Real good feeling completing this set - more so than other sets I've been able to complete in the past, but I'm wondering if the down time that always follows the period of elation will last longer with this set. Time will tell.

As a new guy, let me add my congrats, Ralph I read this post when you first put it up and it "inspired" me to check all the mintages for the Morgans. You got me wondering. Unless I counted wrong, you must have 95 coins in your Morgan collection? That's a bunch--far more than I imagined when I first decided to start collecting them. One from each mint from every year (less the 1895). I surely do love the Morgans but don't know if I'll ever get there. Prices keep going up n up all the time. It would be interesting to hear from some of the other members here who have a completed collection. I don't imagine there would be many.

Completion,,WOW I have never even thought about it, guess I'm to busy chasing those morgans that wink at me or a new VAM LOL...makes me wish I had collected as a collector back when I started some 40 years ago when things were much cheaper....I still lov'em all, But congrats to the finest accomplishment to actually complete a set of Morgans...

Sidekick, yes - 95 regular issue, along with a few early varieties ('78-8TF, '78-7/8TF, '78-3rdRev, '79-2ndRev) but I haven't concentrated on varieties all that much - lots of folks do, though. I can relate to your statement about not knowing if you'll ever get there - my set started with a gift from a friend of 3 Morgans from Littleton (1884-O, 1885-O, and 1904-O) back in 2005 (still pretty green back then) and I just picked one up on ebay once in awhile - common dates, and not high grade - until I had all but the keys and semi-keys - stopping point for me as I wasn't sure I wanted to spend the kind of money it would cost to go further with the set - finally ventured into the area of the CC Morgans - all my first CCs were AG-3, and I remember that I was pretty proud of them - after all they were Carson City Morgans - even posted them here on the forum way back when. Over time, with the help and advice of some of the members here (SuperDave, Bryan, MorganFred, as well as others) and by buying some of the books I needed to educate myself about the series, I eventually got past the hurdle I'd placed in front of myself, and moved forward to completion. I started out with the idea (very similar to what you posted) that I'd probably never complete the set - just get what I could, and be happy that I'd gotten that far, but, everytime I filled another hole, I wanted to fill another, and, since the coins I lacked cost a good deal more than what I'd already gotten, I created a seperate set-aside just for the purpose of getting the Morgans I wanted/needed - often I went several months at a time without buying a single Morgan, saving up for the next one until I was able to put the final coin in the album. For me, it took alot of waiting, watching, and saving, but reaching my goal of completion makes it all worthwhile.

aladinslamp - forty years ago? Man, I think I was probably still in the spending stage of U.S. money - over time, I got REAL good at that :) - started collecting coins in March of 2005 so I'm crowding up on six years - hope I live long enough to get another 36 years into this stage of U.S. money.

Hey Mitch. Yes, I've a few other sets I'm working on, but the coins I'm missing for them are keys (spelled expensive) and it'll be awhile before I can pick any of them up. Kudos on starting a set of Morgan dollars - gotta warn you though.....they're addictive!

Congrats Ralph. It's nice to see that this is attainable with hard work and patience. I'm travelling slowly down that road and will hopefully be there someday!

I've no doubt just about everybody here has completed at least one set of coins, and experienced the feeling of elation that comes with getting that last coin. And, in turn, experienced the down time that follows that elation. Usually that down period is of short duration, and it's right back to working on another set; however, it's been around three weeks since I completed this set, and I've not added the first coin to my collection since then - bummer! It's not that I haven't been looking - I go over to the big ebay pond, and go fishing everyday, but it's kinda hard to get charged up right now. Even though I've other sets in the works, it's kind of like I'm directionless. I've no doubt, in time, this will pass because I enjoy this hobby too much not to continue - guess it's a matter of - if you try for something for a long time, and finally get it, be prepared for the down time after you get there. Mind you, I'm certainly not complaining - I've worked on this set for a long time, and I'm delighted to have completed it. I guess I'm, more or less, rambling on about the situation in hopes that by putting it out there for others to see, it will become less of a problem for me. Ralph
