Nice lloking coin, I like the half moon toning. I'm going to call it a slider MS-64 for sure, MS-65 maybe.

It was fun at the store I went through about 20 of these GSA coins tossing one after another aside "junk, junk, junk..." Finally got this one and I was like "wow clean cheek!" "wow clean fields!". And then I flipped it over and saw the half moon at which point the dealer grimaced and said "sorry about that wouldn't have put it out if I knew the back was that bad".

Time for negotiations :) I got a pretty good price.

I love it when I find great toning in a GSA holder since it is almost certainly attributable to how the coin was stored in its original mint bag. Many coins in normal holders were retoned at some point in their "career".

Not a toning fan, however this just points to the history of the coin.
Very nice coin. I would leave it as is.

Note PCGS will add a half grade for this type of toning:

looks like it had a coin laying on top of it and that is why it has the crescent toning around the coin that was on top of yours. I find it funny that these in GSA holders weren't allowed to be called Uncirculated, they were just called "Silver Dollars" instead of "Uncirculated Silver Dollar"

perhaps at the time of there releasing they didn't want to upset the market by dumping them as they did and with advertising.....or competing against coins already graded in the system....

I have looked and looked again, I believe the luster IS NOT original, I see obverse wear, on the cap, the leaves, the hair over the ear and some small distracting marks on Anna's face, I see this coin dipped or cleaned some time ago, causing the luster to look as it does, not a crisp, clear cartwheel looking luster.
I would grade the coin an MS 62-63, if it was a good day, MS63.......

Morgans, it has full cartwheel in hand and that frosty luster that is typical of these CC dollars. Nothing unusual under magnification. I have a PCGS MS-65 1883-CC (it is pictured over in the "28 days area") that has much more chatter on the face and other surfaces. From a surface marks perspective, this one is super clean.

Here's the (notably inferior in hand) 1883-CC for comparison:

There were no TPG's back then, its just back then if a coin was toned they considered it damaged. That is why so many Morgans got dipped so many years ago because I have talked to a dealer and they said they used to have toned coins sit in their inventory for months and no one wanted it even at a discount price, they would dip it and put it out and mark up the price and it would be gone within hours. This wasn't a one time occurrence either, it happened time after time. No one wanted toned coins, if they weren't blast white they didn't want them

I sure don't see it, any dipping would have removed the crescent toning also so I really doubt it was dipped
