well this time of year it could have been spent on purpose because they were scratching all the money they had available to them and maybe they were purchasing a gift for someone that was more important to them than the coin was

best one I heard was a guy around 22 or 23 bought a case of beer at a convience store and used a 20$ gold coin. The clerk seen it and said "I dont think we take these" and asked the manager. The manager said yes and took the coin and made change. Then the manager took it to the coin store and got around $1500.00-- now that is DUMB!

The Ike may be valuable too I believe it is a business strike on a proof planchet and could grade MS 65. The friendly eagle varieties are documented but there isn't too much info, apparently, on other proof planchet struck varieties. Polish level is just too high for it to be a regular 71-d lots of mirror reflectivity

they usually get a couple $20 gold coins in the Salvation army kettle each year. This year I think the most has been the guy who put a envelope with $5500.00 in at one time

Remember how some of our members tout that knowledge is king...think about it! It's truly sad that morons are oblivious to some circumstances and situations.

Quote: I'm perplexed by the Ike there was no proof D Ike in 1971 yet this coin shows fairly remarkable reflectivity and original cartwheel luster perhaps it was one of the first struck? I'm an Ike novice but I think it might be one heck of a find Didn't they ship left over and imperfect proof planchets to Denver back then? I seem to recall reading that somewhere. I somewhat recently scored a 450+ stash of Ikes and there were a number of "shiny D's" in there - I assumed they were common finds like they are for halves.

Yes a fairly large, 500k, number of friendly eagle variety 1971-d ikes were struck on proof planchets. Mine however is not a friendly eagle so the question is how many regular dies were struck on those planchets?

You're sure all the FEVs were on proof planchets? Why would that be? I found three in that stash and I don't remember them being proof-life. I'll have to go dig them out now and check - now you've got me curious!

Actually good point further research shows only 5-10% of the FEV's, similar to the general population, were struck on proof planchets.
So I guess I have proof planchet Ike which makes it a bit more rare but other than that nothing super special. Oh well on to the next coin :)

I don't know if its people being dumb, its just the fact that "coin collecting" is not on everyone's mind. Most people wouldn't think that something that says 1 dollar is going to be worth more than that. Thats my opinion, I didn't really think so till I started researching myself.

Who knows if silver values crash it may again be worth $1. And I would be very rich since I'm shorting silver stocks right now :)
