Just learned a couple of new things thanks. Now I need to go get a book.I just looked at my 1887 & saw that it has slanted arrow feathers but have no idea what (rev of 79) means. It also has seven feathers, does this mean anything?

59.......I have learned alot on here in just a month by asking many questions. I also recently got a Guide to Morgan Collecting by David Bowers and a 2011 RedBook a few months ago. Great bathroom reading or if you are going on a trip. Buy one online or at a coin shop

REV of 79 means the reverse side of the 1879 Morgan as opposed to the OBV or obverse side.

Does that mean they used two different dies?

correct, Rev of 79 is supposed to be on any date 79 or above. Some 1878 morgans had the reverse of 79 and there are some dates up to 1880 that have the reverse of 78 and that is a main feature of their VAM attributes

On the 1896 P did they use matchig dies, if not what dies did they use? Is this a proper question for this forum. I'm so confused.

BRYAN can correct me if I am wrong but yes....there is a die for each side of the minting the process. A planchet ( a blank coin) is struck on each side....the reverse strike (the back of the coin) is called the anvil side and the obverse (front of the coin) is called the hammer strike.....just like in blacksmithing.

But you wouldn't refer to either side of the finished coin as the hammer or anvil side.....just the obverse and reverse

What is it that gives the coin value? Is it the number of coin struck, Mint they were struck at, or the dies or is it the condition? What should I look for when buying a coin?

Yes this is the fundamentals of the coining process...
2 dies, OBV and REV....But for morgans one must remember the dies represent the intended image or portrait so to speak...
While the first original Obverse of ANA's face remains the same with minor changes, the REV features were changed due to minting issues...
The big book shows (3)type I,II and III Obverse's in which these features will be found on the Obverse dies(and coins)...
While the Reverse coins had many more changes in 1878, things like 8TF, 8 tail feathers, 7TF 7/8 TF, slanted arrow feather, parallel feathers are a few of them....Its by these features we identify the die types and marriages to attribute these years...As noted some of these dies were also used in other years....1878 is a tuff bird to figure out until you figure out and recognize these points.. but it does get much easier......I should note, while these in general are the basic die types, within the 1878 8TF series there were many many more Different reverse types ...This only an basic fundamental post so you get the idea of die types..not meant to be "ALL encompassing". one needs the book to see and study them and learn why there were so many.. ...It does however get much easier after that...

BRYAN1315,

After closer inspection and some sleep, I now see the difference between the PAF and the SAF. I had it in my mind that parallel was horizontal, instead of parallel with the rest of the feathers. Thank you Mrs. Meeks for that school lesson years ago. It finally clicked!

Thanks BRYAN
