That is a gorgeous coin but in all fairness, it is also a $500+ coin in AU and in the thousands in uncirculated.

It would be very helpful if there were some reasoning attached to the opinion.Is it the color or were you able to manipulate the photo for a better look ? I truly am curious. |

Prethen has sharp eyes and a *lot* of experience. I agree, the color is wrong for an original coin, even if it hasn't been under conditions which would cause oxidization. My contention that there's insufficient proof - which I should have clarified better - means that to me there's maybe a 10-20% chance that what I'm seeing is the result of overlit and overexposed photography. Especially obvious on the reverse are darker areas within the lettering, behind the arrowheads and under the wing which are a "smoking gun" indicator. Chances are, it's been cleaned. I'm just not one to say "I'm sure" unless it's proven beyond a doubt, and there's still a glimmer of doubt in this case. |

The question is more whether its been harshly cleaned/scrubbed, and I don't think it has. It has likely been wiped or lightly cleaned.

Well, it looks like some people think it was cleaned, and others think it wasn't. After looking at it a few more times, I tend to think it was cleaned (my opinion). It looks a bit too polished and smooth. But, I am not the expert here. You guys are. Well, in the end it didn't cost me anything since the seller didn't send it to me, and I got my $70 refund.

Yes lincolncollector it is a moot point for you...but there is always something to be learned by discussing with other members...and it is always good to know who the experts are. I tend to learn more when I see answers with explanations such as SuperDave just gave above.

I did some homework on this coin. Very sharp by the way. I think $70 is kinf of high IMO. I think $50 would have been a better buy. Hold on to it for a while.

I'm glad you got a refund , but I dont think the seller had to do it morally. You saw the pics before bidding and the seller lost a chance to sell it to someone else maybe at $69 dollars or maybe not.
As long as his pics were clear and he stated as-is a refund should only be honored if the coin is damged in shipping or he lied about the coins appearance with trick pictures or the coin was fake.
Like others mentioned He might have no knowledge of the coins previous handling or what happened to it or didn't in the coins past.
Just my opinion but you got your money back and all is well.

coppertop...the seller does have the chance to offer a "second chance" to the next highest bidder...at least that option comes up on my sales.But I agree with the rest of your post.

The dead giveaway that this coin has been cleaned is that it is well worn and white except for dirt in the protected areas. That's a major read flag. The only way a coin will get that way is if it has been cleaned. The dirt from all of the devices and fields has been removed giving that unattractive dull look.

coppertop5150 - You're right. I won the auction, (without knowing if the coin was cleaned) so he could have sent it to me, and then I could have returned it for the refund. But, I'm glad the way it ended. The refund finally cleared through paypal and I deposited it in my bank acct. But, I just looked at the seller's profile on ebay and he is "not a registered user". |
