Solid MS-62. If it wasn't for the spots and whatnot, I'd put it at MS63+.

That's a neat-o looking coin. Great picture, too! You got skills!

This is RPM-001, but not the small date over large date. Still a very nice and popular variety.

This coin came up at the last minute of a local auction.
At $ 7.50 I thought it would be worth a try since I didn't have one yet.

Your coin is indeed an example of 1960D-1MM-001. Your buy price of $7.50 was not out of line, considering finding these in red BU is rather difficult. They aren't all that common. Your coin grades MS62RD - so low primarily because of the spotting.

Coppercoins,
I usually never clean any of my coins unless it is with some harmless diluted Dawn liquid soap/water or an acetone dip with both an extra soft toothbrush and ultrasonic rinse with dei h2o.
In your opinion would the effective removal of these spots using the above methods raise the grade/price of this coin significantly enough to warrant these extra cleaning steps?
Thanks, mdpmedia

It won't remove these. If it did, it would have to remove the top layer of the coin and drop the grade even more. Best to not touch it.

What about using Verdi-Care or Verdi-Gone? Would that do the trick? John1

Those look like carbon spots John - they are there to stay.

You cannot raise the grade of a coin by cleaning it. Nothing you do will be 'undetectable', and anything you do that is detected would lower the grade of the coin - not raise it.
If there is an undetectable solution for this it would go under the category heading of 'deception' - the coin is what it is - enjoy it for that.
There is actually a way to remove carbon from red copper...but it takes a lot of time, a very steady hand, and the right tools along with a LOT of experience. I don't do it, but know someone who does...and no...this coin wouldn't come close to being worth the fee.
