I'll agree with AU-55, there's a lot to like about this coin.

I'm thinking EF-40 on this one...too many details missing at breast, right wing and rivits for me to go higher.Nice coin !

These often have weak strikes, which is probably why. In terms of actual 'detail' compared to a solidly struck unc, you're talking VF-35 or EF-40

Too much wear IMO for AU, but with the remaining luster and sharp detail it looks solid for EF-45. Nice strong date!

Thanks for the comments. My opionion seems to be more around the forum average at AU-50. It definitely has obvious wear, but I think it barely has enough luster to carry it to a 50 though it would be 45 otherwise.

Hmm...maybe its just the photos, but the coin looks unusually clean (as in, not much chatter/hairlines typically seen on XF-AU coins) for the grade. I guess thats kind of why I said 55...but thinking back, I have a Barber half dollar with similar characteristics.

Which brings up an interesting point....we would then grade a nice strike lower ?
I do know we tend to grade up on SLQ's, but I'm thinking this is an average strike, which is what the ANA grading standards are based on. Am I thinking incorrectly ?

This is why luster is important here for evaluating the grade. Had it been a fully struck piece with the same amount of detail as this one; there would be less luster visible since it would have had to been exposed to more wear. So yes, it would grade lower imho.

Anyways, SLQs are some of the toughest coins to grade, and there is often a wide difference in opinions. ANACS just kicked my rear end on a 1916 I had graded, but it really depends on how heavily you weigh certain attributes of a coin.

Nice vf, due to weak strike. An au from the slobbing services wouldn't surprise me.
