Interesting. Looks like it could be a rotated die.

Oh I see the rest of the memorial...

I'm thinking PMD also...may be an error, but I highly doubt it

Im sorry Gracie but this was done after it left the Mint. Theres not a single type of error that could do this to a penny. It was most likely done by a grinding wheel by someone with alot of time on there hands. So to be bearer of the bad news its only worth a penny.

Great post! Here's two questions that might help:
Is the orientation of the cent design on the reverse rotated 90 degrees in relation to the design on the obverse? (as might be suggested by the orientation of your images (above). If so... that would be really REALLY weird.
Lastly, what is the "provenience" of the coin? (that is... by what string of ownership did it pass into your hands.) This could tell a lot of the story.

The coin was ground off in some way except where the center is.
You can see it was done in increments too. There are lines going at an angle from the edge to the raised copper center. Every 5 or 10 degrees or so I would say. Just an altered coin.

There's no question...it was machined on a rotating sander or grinder of some sort. I've done sculptures where I had to grind the metal and the lines are pretty much exactly what you see on the coin. Somebody had a little too much time on their hands.

Just occured to me. If the grinding job was finished smooth on both sides and then the center hole was punched you would have a zinc. washer. Anyone know where they can buy a washer today for only 1 Cent ?
I don't. Might be a decent profit there. Not much, but in quantity ?
