Im in the VF-35 camp on the half. Now the Indian cent grade is just obscene and you have to wonder under what conditions they had "three" graders agree on that one.

Wow, just saw the IHC. That coin may make XF. That's obvious circulation wear.

VF20 lists @ 282 + xf40 @ 390, so 400 is still a premium price. Then again that coin is a textbook vf, not au55. Which brings up the problem with slobbing. If you offer to pay 400 for an au55 and someone sends you that coin, you have to honor your bid. Knowing it's out there, you can't offer more than 225 or so, which drags down the price of the legitimate au55s. Thus the TPG, which is supposed to protect your investment is helping to destroy it.

Yeah, I can tell that AU-55 is a definite overgrade on that IHC even though I don't know the series much...

I bought a 1929 Quarter Eagle in NGC MS61 on ebay. It had pretty good photos, so I felt fairly safe paying $425 for it. Luckily the dealer has a three day return policy. That thing has a slice in the background that ran all the way from the rim of the coin and right across ol' Injun Joe's chin. On the reverse there were three flat spots on the rim that looked exactly like three jewelry mounting prongs had spent a considerable amount of time holding it in place. I got on the phone to the dealer and had it back in the mail within two hours of opening the package. The girl on the phone was very nice, and I told her that I wasn't disappointed with the seller, but I certainly have doubts about what NGC calls a mint state coin. I'm going to be shipping some gold to NGC to be slabbed soon, and I feel a lot more confident that my Indians wont be coming home in a body bag.

This goes to show why I don't like buying slabbed coins. That and the fake slabs that are circulating from China like crazy. Most people don't want to break into a slab, and with these fakes, its the only way to know for sure if its a good counterfeit. Unfortunately, the counterfeiters are getting good.

More true than many think. Counterfeited slabs are now the latest fad from places like China. And why not? As noted most people will hesitate to even open some slabs so will never know they are fakes. And I still remember a dealer showing me a slab he opened and replace the coin with something completely different just to show people it can be done. So buying a slabbed coin today means very little anymore.

Yep, vf, certainly not xf.
People tend to forget that grades are supposed to have a general overall "look" to be any given grade.

I agree the pictures make it look like a VF/XF not choice XF. However, it's conceivable that it's a soft strike right? Perhaps the pictures don't indicate that there's lust nor the actual wear pattern. Also, yep...PCGS can definitely overgrade. I doubt that coin would ever CAC.

Hmm... It doesn't look softly struck to me. It just looks textbook VF I guess, referring to what biggfredd posted. The huge flatness on the reverse corn seems to tell me that its wear to a high extent, as well as the lack of luster and relatively sharp impression. What gets me the most is how much they give out free passes on oft-problem coins like Seated Liberty dollars just because so few of them are original, because then ignorant buyers will just buy problem coins for full price. And I don't mean minor dipping or a 'gentle old cleaning' either. I have no problem with a lower standard, but the level they sink to can be absurd at times.
