Thanks amacs for giving this thread a bump back to the active threads! I voted local dealer but, it depends upon what I'm looking for, the best price, grade and so forth. The % for internet auctions shows the increase in coin collecting and why the growth over the last few years. e-bay and so forth has made coin collecting more convenient and affordable. Pre e-bay days are a thing of the past and perhaps is being reflected in the increased values as popularity increases.

Although I have utilized e-bay for other things and other collectibles, I've been leary about purchasing coins there. It's just a personal thing. amacs and others are inspiring me to branch out and perhaps make a purchase in the near future from e-bay BUT, only from a seller with VERY good feedback. amacs - I'll give you a try as I know from the CCF that honesty abounds with our long-standing members and I hope that my previous threads regarding e-bay sellers was not offensive to you and to others here. I take caveat emptor to heart and it takes me a lot of research and months of "watching" to endear a trust with e-bay in general.

I have never seen anyone sell coins at a garage sale. How often does that happen?

I have bought over 500 coins ( Every coin in my collection, except for mint purchases and my own finds) off of ebay and have not been scammed once.

ebay is mainly filled with honest sellers. Of course there are crooks in any market.

You must know what you are buying and whom you are buying it from.

It is the best deal by far for coin purchases.

There is one coin shop it the town where I live and coin shows in this state do not exist.Taking the Morgan dollar for example,my local dealer might have 100-150 coins for me to look at while ebay will have 14k to look at. If you find ebay sellers with good feedback and a return policy, you can find what your looking for at the price your willing to pay.I have returned only two coins out of hundreds purchased and have never been "ripped off" yet.

The best advice for coin purchasing, weather local or internet is to be informed as to the coins your collecting.Arm yourself with as much information as possible before buying and try not to go over your planned paying price.

This is an older thread, but I'm "new" so I'll throw in my $0.02. I have never seen any decent coins at garage sales, and my work prevents me from getting to estate sales early enough to compete for good stuff.

When I was new to collecting, I was buying a lot of Morgans at an estate auction house. I was okay at determining the wear on coins, but alas, I didn't realize this place sold 90% cleaned coins. Ouch.

Then I started buying on ebay. While I have never been ripped off, I very rarely got a nice coin either. Maybe my monitor is weak, or maybe I just can't grade a picture. Almost nothing looked as good as the photo, and I also don't bid on sales with fuzzy photos.

Coins shops around here are run by a couple of guys that I just can't seem to mesh with. Don't know why.

Then I discovered coin shows. I'll take a show hands down any day. I can find numerous dealers who have what I need. It's great to be able to pour over several coins in the grade you want, where the local dealer might only have one. I have bought about 30 coins at shows, and each one was less than I could have gotten it on-line.

Coins shows........ Don't collect without 'em!

An Internet auction is actually one of the worst places to buy coins. Unless the pictures are stellar and many are taken at various angles and light perspectives, you're essentially buying the coin sight unseen. Trust me...I know. However, if you have a trusted relationship with the seller and/or someone who can see the coin, then that's a different story.

I guess I would have to say my local coin dealer. I have bought several coins on ebay and have gotten some great deals. I have also gotten some deals at the coin shop. What I really like about the local is that he usually has several of the coins I am looking for in different grades. I can compare them in person and decide which one I want.

In the spring I frequent garage sales. I have been doing this for 5 years and I have only found 1 coin. It was a 1879 Morgan that was attached to a belt with a clasp around it. I purchased it for $.25. It was a slider but it was still worth more than a quarter. Garage sales are great but be prepared not to find any coins.

I've heard that from many, many people. I even had a friend tell me not to go to certain garage sales because he was already there and no coins. I went there and ASKED FOR ANY COINS. Like I keep saying, most people do not put them out. You have to ask. I would venture to say I find some at about 10% of the ones where I asked if they had any old coins in jars, cans, boxes, books, etc. You have to ask.
Oh one more thing that is usually NOT out on display is guns, knives, stamps. Again, you have to ask.

I think I am very luck, Like I have said mainy times I beleave I have the best local dealer. I can not find a dealer who has beter prices then him. But the only down side of his shop which isn't that big of a deal to me is he doesn't have a lot of high graded coins most are vg-xf and morgan and Franklin half AU+. So for the average collector there is no beter shop to go to. But there are not a lot of far dealer out there. So if you ever come though Boise Idaho I can let you know of the two best shop I know of.

The Internet is the cheapest and most convenient place to buy coins but I wouldn't say it's the best (especially Internet Auctions). I prefer to buy new coins from the mint ( Royal Canadian Mint and am considering buying from the US mint if I can). Other than that - local dealers especially my mid-sized town don't have a wide enough selection. I have to go into a big city - Vancouver - to get the coins I want.

I've gotten some great offers in the mail.

Just yesterday I received a flyer advertising a complete set of "the disappearing" Statehood Quarters for only $30 plus shipping and handling. And, not only that, but the company will send other coins on approval for you to look at.
